Marvel’s Thanos Inspired One of Squid Game Season 2’s Best New Characters

As a movie enthusiast with a keen interest in international cinema and a soft spot for shows that push the boundaries of storytelling, I must say that the second season of Netflix’s Squid Game has left me absolutely enthralled! The introduction of Player 230, or Thanos as he is fondly known, has added an electrifying dose of chaos to this already gripping series.

Netflix’s popular show “Squid Game” has introduced a new disruptive force, and he sports purple hair as a tribute to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s infamous villain. In the second season of this acclaimed Korean series, we meet Player 230, a flamboyant rapper who goes by the name Thanos, even adorning his fingernails with colors reminiscent of the Infinity Stones. Portrayed by K-pop star T.O.P. (Choi Seung-hyun), this unstable contestant injects an electrifying vibe into the deadly competition show.

Instead of Josh Brolin’s character being a universe-threatening titan, Squid Game’s Thanos gained his notoriety through his exceptional musical abilities, bragging that his raps were powerful enough to eliminate half the planet’s population. This character enters the game following the loss of his wealth due to a cryptocurrency fraud perpetrated by financial YouTube personality “Amazing Myung-gi” (Yim Si-wan), who likewise becomes a participant in the games.

T.O.P.’s portrayal stands out for its manic intensity. His Thanos navigates the lethal games with an unsettling combination of drug-fueled bravado and malicious intent, “often dancing, cheering and hitting on young women as the players around him cower for their lives.” The character is never seen without his massive cross necklace, which contains an assortment of party drugs. The casting of T.O.P. also adds another layer of authenticity to the role. As a former member of BigBang, one of K-pop’s most influential groups – once called the “Kings of K-pop” and the first Korean artists added to Forbes’ Celebrity 100 list in 2016 – he brings real-world star power to the character. He also took playing his role very seriously.

According to executive producer Kim Ji-yeonso, the role was an opportunity for T.O.P. to contemplate his career and life within the music industry. She noted that T.O.P took the role very seriously and had already demonstrated his talent in past work, making him a suitable choice for this part.

This role signifies T.O.P.’s comeback to acting after a seven-year break, since he was last seen in the 2017 German-Chinese thriller “Out of Control”. His past performances garnered substantial recognition, with him winning Best New Actor at the 2010 Blue Dragon Film Awards and the 2011 Baeksang Arts Awards for his acting in the Korean war film “71: Into the Fire”.

Initially, the series’ creator Hwang Dong-hyuk designed the character before T.O.P was chosen for the role, shaping an adversary capable of introducing a never-seen-before level of turmoil within the games. This is particularly noticeable in the Red Light, Green Light scene, where Thanos’s actions result in numerous player casualties.

In keeping with the show’s self-referential style, it’s not the first time that “Squid Game” has intertwined real-life connections. In the first season of this popular series, a player discussed Korean actor Lee Byung Hun, who was actually portraying the masked Director overseeing the games. As “Squid Game” delves deeper into human behavior under extreme situations, Thanos emerges as a unique antagonist – one who sees the deadly contest as his personal amusement park, injecting Marvel-style chaos into an already dangerous game.

Squid Game Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
