Deadpool 3 Director Shares Update on His Star Wars Movie

As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of Jedi masters and Sith lords alike, I must say that Shawn Levy’s secretive Star Wars film project piques my interest more than a Wookiee in heat draws a TIE fighter. With his proven knack for crafting entertaining blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine, I have high hopes that this new addition to the galaxy far, far away will be nothing short of galactic marvel.

Currently, the Star Wars film segment is going through some changes, yet there are several upcoming projects that have fans buzzing with anticipation. One of these intriguing ventures is Shawn Levy’s unfinished Star Wars movie, which remains enveloped in secrecy. In a recent conversation with IndieWire, Levy delved deeply into the details of his latest blockbuster featuring Deadpool and Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds. However, he also offered some insights regarding his Star Wars project, revealing who he’s collaborating with to bring this vision to fruition.

Since I enjoyed ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ so much, I’m eagerly looking forward to whatever comes next. Interestingly enough, I’m working on a ‘Star Wars’ movie, and the screenwriter for that project is Jonathan Tropper, who also worked on ‘The Adam Project’. You never know what ideas might end up being produced in the future.” (Levy)

There’s limited information available about the plot of the upcoming Star Wars film or its position in the timeline, but director Levy has shared some valuable perspectives on his approach to this project. In an interview with Happy Sad Confused podcast, he discussed the project and what he aims to prevent: a repetitive Star Wars film or one that requires viewing another movie for context.

When queried about what Star Wars represents to him, Levy responded by admitting that pondering this question has become necessary due to the limited scope of the Star Wars timeline. As there are only so many instances where Star Wars films can revisit the same period in history, he feels compelled to ensure his work doesn’t repeat what others have done, and also avoid creating a movie that requires serving another film.

In his own words, Levy expressed a desire to create something that resonated deeply with him, encompassing the tone and characters in an authentic manner. He believes there is undeniably a power within us, a connection to something greater than ourselves, which he refers to as “The Force.” For him, this concept, coupled with aesthetic appeal and personal satisfaction, embodies the essence of Star Wars.

Levy’s remarks suggest that what he’s discussing appears to be self-contained and not directly linked to the Skywalker saga. For now, it seems unclear how Star Wars will develop in future films, so there’s a possibility that any of the projects we’ve heard about could move forward quickly.

Alongside Levy’s project, another exciting development is the highly anticipated Jon Favreau-directed film titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” set after season 3 of The Mandalorian. Additionally, there are several upcoming projects from Dave Filoni, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and James Mangold, each offering unique settings and focuses.

Filoni’s movie is set during The New Republic era, contrasting Obaid-Chinoy’s film which revolves around Rey as a Skywalker. Meanwhile, Mangold’s movie focuses on the rise of the Jedi, though it’s uncertain if any of these projects will be released. However, Levy and Tropper’s project seems to be progressing well.

Of all the Star Wars projects, which one are you most looking forward to discussing on Bluesky @KnightofOA?
