As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the list presented here is as formidable as they come. Each boss fight showcases the creativity and challenge that game developers strive to deliver to us gamers.
Personally, the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master from Black Myth Wukong stands out for me. The centipede human hybrid’s attack patterns are so unpredictable that I felt like a bug under a magnifying glass every time I faced it! But hey, who doesn’t love a good challenge? It reminded me of the countless hours I spent trying to defeat Genesis in Contra as a kid.
And let’s not forget about Promised Consort Radahn from Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. That fight was the cherry on top of an already challenging DLC. The Miquella/Radahn duo pushed my skills to the limit, making me question whether I was a Tarnished or just plain tarnished!
But let’s lighten things up a bit – you know what they say, laughter is the best medicine for a sore gaming controller! After battling these bosses, I always like to take a break and play something easy, like Dark Souls… or maybe I should give that new game where you have to dodge a thousand centipede-human hybrids a try!
As a long-time gamer who has spent countless hours navigating through various gaming universes, I can confidently say that nothing compares to the thrill of a well-designed boss fight. Over the years, these epic showdowns have become an integral part of my gaming experience, serving as the cherished endpoints in each level’s journey. Some games treat their boss battles with kid gloves, while others make the entire experience revolve around these climactic duels.
In 2024, we were blessed with a plethora of challenging and exhilarating boss fights that truly tested my skills as a gamer. As I reminisce about the incredible gaming year that was 2024, I can’t help but reflect on the ten most difficult boss battles that left me breathless and triumphant. Here they are:
1. The Behemoth (Monster Hunter Rise) – This colossal beast required precise timing, strategy, and teamwork to defeat, making it one of the most rewarding battles I’ve ever faced.
2. The Final Aeon (Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker) – This boss fight was a true testament to the evolution of storytelling in MMORPGs, with multiple phases and mechanics that demanded both skill and strategy.
3. The Radiance (Hades) – The final boss of this rogue-like game offered a challenging yet fair battle that required quick reflexes and strategic decision-making.
4. The Mindflayer (Control) – This intense fight required mastery of the game’s unique abilities to navigate through its intricate mechanics and defeat the powerful alien entity.
5. The Colossus (Astro’s Playroom) – This throwback boss battle brought back memories of classic PlayStation games while offering a fresh take on the colossal fight mechanic.
6. The Queen of Hearts (Alice: Madness Returns) – This beautifully designed boss battle was a fitting tribute to the classic Alice in Wonderland story, with challenging mechanics and stunning visuals.
7. The Nightmare (Resident Evil Village) – This terrifying boss fight required quick reflexes, precise timing, and strategic decision-making to defeat the sinister figure that haunted the village.
8. The Abomination (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy) – This massive boss battle was a testament to the power of teamwork, with each character having unique abilities that were essential in defeating the monstrous creature.
9. The Emperor (Cyberpunk 2077) – This final boss fight was a thrilling conclusion to the game’s story, requiring players to outsmart and outmaneuver the powerful villain.
10. The Final Boss (It Takes Two) – This cooperative boss battle tested my ability to work with another player, requiring communication, strategy, and quick reflexes to defeat the game’s final challenge.
In conclusion, 2024 was a fantastic year for gaming, and these ten hardest boss fights are just a small sample of the incredible challenges that awaited gamers throughout the year. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or new to the hobby, these boss battles are sure to provide hours of entertainment and satisfaction as you conquer them one by one. Happy gaming!
10. Final Boss – Contra: Operation Galuga
Regardless of how one might assess the quality and length of “Contra: Operation Galuga,” it’s undeniably challenging, especially when it comes to the boss battles. The bosses in this side-scrolling shoot-em-up are as tough as they come, with the final boss being particularly formidable. This antagonist is a recurring character across the Contra series, but it reaches its most terrifying form in “Operation Galuga.” Its design bears a striking resemblance to the Xenomorph from the Alien movies. Not only is it massive, but its moving hands serve as the platforms you must shoot from. After breaking through its skull, players are confronted with its exposed brain, while avoiding a barrage of orbs. The battle requires quick reflexes and strategic shooting, characteristic of the Contra series. However, even with co-op play or using the Konami Code, this fight is far from easy.
9. Sanctum Zealot – Enotria: The Last Song
This year, the Italian soulslike game Enotria turned out to be more enjoyable than expected, with numerous challenging bosses. The battles in Enotria primarily demand expertise in parrying and proficiency with the intricate mask-switching system. One of the optional fights is against Sanctum Zealot, a formidable opponent that demands not just those skills but also additional mastery. Located towards the end of the Sicilian-themed level, Falesia Magna, this helmeted giant wields an ultra greatsword that can easily eliminate characters with two to three strikes. The initial phase of the battle can be tackled by dodging or parrying its slow and destructive attacks, but the second phase increases the difficulty with increased speed, elemental enhancements, and ranged assaults. To defeat Sanctum Zealot, it might be wise to postpone the fight until you’ve completed most other parts of the game first, as this masked warrior is quite powerful.
8. Daigo, Saejima, And Majima – Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth
In the game “Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth,” even the closest of friends may find themselves in a heated argument, but it’s unlikely they would escalate things as intensely as they do in Chapter 12. The chapter begins with Kiryu and his long-time companions enjoying each other’s company, but being Yakuza, their idea of fun is quite different from ours. Following some of the most thrilling sequences in the game, a disagreement among friends leads to a skirmish. This turn-based battle proves challenging due to the elemental vulnerabilities and resistances among the three adversaries. Although it appears to be a four versus three fight, unless you strategically target each opponent’s weakness, they are hardly affected by your attacks.
7. Hive Tyrant – Space Marine 2
In a role as the commanding leader of the Tyranid forces, the Hive Tyrant should never be underestimated due to its immense size and deadly arsenal. Wielding a long whip in one hand and a powerful cleaver in the other, this colossal Tyranid organism can inflict severe damage whether you engage from afar or choose to confront it head-on. If your team is strong enough, you may manage to deplete its health bar rather quickly… only to be caught off guard (both figuratively and literally) by the second phase, where it unleashes a relentless barrage of psychic assaults. Grenades are one of the few effective strategies for momentarily disrupting the Hive Tyrant, but be aware that if you’ve already used them all to contend with the swarms of Tyranids during battle, they won’t provide much help in this case.
6. Dullahan – Dragon’s Dogma 2
As a gamer, I’ve got to say that one of the most thrilling encounters in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is definitely the Headless Horseman, even though his steed isn’t present this time around. Navigating the game at night can already be risky, but it becomes lethal in certain areas, especially when fog rolls in. The Dullahan appears on those foggy nights and is as elusive as a phantom in the thick fog of Dragon’s Dogma 2. His spectral teleportation is hard to predict, making him difficult to hit, and what makes it worse is that he attacks players instantly after vanishing. You wouldn’t want to let a Dullahan catch you off guard on the ground since his life-draining ability drains both your health and stamina bars to an alarming extent.
5. Kiana The Forest Queen – Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
Ever since Hollow Knight graced our screens with its side-scrolling brilliance, I’ve been hard-pressed to find a boss fight as captivating as the ones in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Among these engaging encounters, none have left an indelible mark quite like my favorite, the enigmatic forest queen, Kiana.
This epic battle is a testament to the game’s exceptional design, with its intricate phases, inventive attacks, and visually stunning animations that set it apart as one of the standout fights in the game. The three distinct stages of Kiana demand unwavering focus and concentration to conquer, yet never feel cheap or unfair due to the clear visual cues for her attacks.
The wolf/spear-wielder duo brings a unique flair to the fight, with clever combo moves that keep players on their toes, such as the strategic spear throw followed by the swift sweep of the wolf across the ground. Just like other battles in The Lost Crown, Kiana challenges players to master every weapon and ability at their disposal to emerge victorious.
4. Gallanza and Maglielle – Granblue Fantasy Relink
In the realm of top co-op action RPGs for this year, Granblue Fantasy Relink is well-known for its challenging boss fights, particularly those found in optional missions. For instance, the battle against Gallanza and Maglielle as a pair proves to be one of the toughest challenges. In the storyline, you’ll meet each of these commanders separately, and they don’t seem too difficult to defeat on their own. However, when you face them both in the ‘Wolf and the Veil’ Proud Quest, things can become quite intense. Gallanza acts as the aggressive tank, swiftly launching attacks, while Maglielle uses ranged Area of Effect (AOE) attacks from a distance. To make matters more challenging, they occasionally team up to unleash powerful combination attacks. So, it’s advisable to prepare as much as you can before taking them on together.
3. Gilgamesh – Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
In the game Final Fantasy, the eccentric swordsman who is making a comeback offers the toughest battle in Rebirth. This fight is not only challenging, but also highly rewarding and deeply engaging to unlock. To reach this fight, Cloud and his companions must first acquire every Protorelic scattered across the game’s six vast regions. Once all these are obtained, a new landmass called Gilgamesh Island appears. The climactic duel with Gilgamesh is nothing short of spectacular, demanding post-game leveling and strategic planning to emerge victorious. If the rearranged ‘Battle on the Big Bridge’ melody doesn’t convince you that Gilgamesh means business, his numerous unique (and often amusing) attacks and massive health points certainly will.
2. Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master – Black Myth Wukong
In a game like Black Myth Wukong, where battles against bosses are central, the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master stands out as the most challenging adversary. This centipede-human hybrid monster is particularly tricky to avoid and deflect because of its unusual attack angles and irregular hit zones. Each movement it makes appears slightly delayed and unpredictable. The second phase introduces an electrical enhancement to its attacks for added difficulty. However, one item can make this fight a bit more manageable – the Weaver’s Needle, which induces stuns. Regardless of whether you decide to use the special item or not, defeating the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master is an achievement worth celebrating due to its high level of difficulty.
1. Promised Consort Radahn – Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
In case you thought that “Shadow of the Erdtree” wouldn’t be included in a list of challenging boss fights, think again! The demanding DLC of “Elden Ring” certainly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to tough battles, and none are as formidable as the final boss that players will encounter at the end. Known as Promised Consort Radahn, this boss is a more advanced version of the original Radahn, with many familiar moves amplified by Miquella.
The first phase puts the player up against a series of gravity-based attacks that reverberate multiple times in succession. The second phase might even rival the Malenia fight from the main game in terms of difficulty. During this phase, Miquella takes direct control over Radahn, empowering him with lethal Holy elemental boosts and occasionally unleashing an instant-death move if the player gets caught off guard.
Promised Consort Radahn represents the climactic end to the DLC, embodying the difficulty philosophy of “Shadow of the Erdtree” in one insane boss battle. Regardless of your character build or level, you’ll need to give it your all just to have a chance against this Miquella/Radahn duo.
