As a dedicated Pokémon Trainer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that I am both excited and slightly disappointed by the upcoming Battle Partners set for the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG). The return of Trainer’s Pokémon is a welcome throwback to the good old days of Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge sets. However, the inclusion of cards not associated with any specific trainers might take away from the nostalgic feel that fans were hoping for.
The new cards based on Sprigatito, Swinub, and even Brock’s Scouting Supporter card pique my curiosity, but I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that we might not see as many trainer-specific cards as we did in the original sets. I have fond memories of building decks centered around my favorite trainers like Brock and Misty, and it would be great to continue that tradition with new trainers like Iono, N, Hop, and Lillie.
That being said, I’m still excited to see what other surprises Battle Partners has in store for us. Who knows, maybe we’ll get a surprise card based on one of my favorite trainers from the series! And hey, if they decide to add a card featuring the legendary Gary Oak, I’d be more than happy to make room in my deck for him. After all, he was the original Pokémon champion, and it’s about time he got his due recognition in the TCG!
In the upcoming month, Japan will see the launch of the new expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, named “Battle Partners”. This set is generating excitement as it revives an old mechanic called Trainer’s Pokémon, which was initially introduced in the Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge sets. These sets showcased Pokémon linked to the Gym Leaders from the Kanto region. However, Battle Partners introduces a twist: while it continues this theme, there will also be cards that don’t have a specific connection to a Pokémon Trainer, marking a departure from the Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge sets.
In the Pokémon TCG, cards featuring Pokémon related to characters such as Iono, N, Hop, and Lillie will be part of the Battle Partners set. The Japanese official website of the game has unveiled a few novel cards, some not tied to any character from the franchise yet. Among these new cards are Zacian belonging to Hop and Voltorb associated with Iono. Additionally, we’ll see cards based on the entire Sprigatito evolution series and Swinub evolution series. As the complete set is still a secret, it’s challenging to predict the ratio of regular Pokémon versus Trainer’s Pokémon. This might be disheartening for fans anticipating a set more similar to the original Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge.
It’s worth noting that one of the newly unveiled Pokemon cards focuses on Brock, a character from the series. The card is called ‘Brock’s Scouting’, and it functions as a Supporter card. This unique card allows players to scan their deck for up to 2 Basic Pokemon or one Evolution card. At present, no other Brock-themed cards have been shown for Battle Partners. It will be intriguing to see if this means more Pokemon Trainers from the series will make an appearance as Supporter cards in future sets. With so many characters to choose from, it would be exciting to see more of them incorporated.
At this time, Battle Partners does not have a release date in North America. There’s usually a delay between the time Japan gets sets and other regions do, so this isn’t too surprising. In fact, next month will see Prismatic Evolutions released locally while Japan gets Battle Partners. According to a previous report, Battle Partners will be released in North America in March, under the name “Journey Together.” None of that information has been confirmed by The Pokemon Company, as of this writing. Hopefully we’ll have a lot more information about the localized version of Battle Partners in the coming weeks!
