Sam Lake, the creative head at Remedy Entertainment responsible for series like Alan Wake, Control, and Max Payne, has shared insights into the future of the “Remedy Shared Universe”. Initially connecting some key storylines and universe aspects from Control with its precursor, Alan Wake, in 2019. The connection between these two franchises, which Remedy referred to as the “Remedy Shared Universe”, deepened significantly in 2023’s Alan Wake II. This paved the way for the upcoming sequel, Control 2. Currently, Lake is contemplating the next steps within this interconnected universe, and it appears that some details are still under development.
In a recent conversation with IGN, Remedy’s creative director, Lake, shared some insights on how they intend to develop the “RCU” (Remedy Connected Universe) moving forward. Rather than planning an ending for the interwoven stories seen in Alan Wake and Control, Lake emphasized that this is merely the start of a larger narrative journey. At this stage, he’s more focused on linking aspects from different games to enrich the central mythology of each storyline.
Above all, Lake emphasized that every fresh project from Remedy should be able to function independently, allowing newcomers to effortlessly join in. This approach, which involves crafting each game as a self-contained story yet incorporating enough elements for devoted Remedy fans to engage with deeply, is a key focus for the studio.
As a seasoned storyteller with years of experience under my belt, I wholeheartedly echo Lake’s sentiments. The thrill of weaving intricate narratives and delving deeper into rich lore never fades away. It’s like unearthing hidden treasures, piece by piece, that bring the story to life in ways I could only dream of when starting out. Every new expansion feels akin to embarking on an exciting journey, where each strand I’ve carefully placed can be explored, expanded upon, and enriched with fresh ideas. This is not just about reaching an endgame; it’s about creating a world that continues to evolve, captivate, and inspire both me and the audience.
In simpler terms, “Lake” said, “Each game should be fun by itself and not rely on others, but also offer additional content for our long-term fans who are familiar with our previous games within the same universe’s narrative.
Before the arrival of “Control 2”, the upcoming significant title in the Remedy Connected Universe, a collaborative shooter named “FBC: Firebreak” is scheduled for release next year. Simultaneously, “Firebreak” is being developed together with the remake of “Max Payne” and its sequel “Max Payne 2”, projects that are being handled by Remedy in partnership with Rockstar Games.
