Beau DeMayo, creator of X-Men ’97, doesn’t mince words when expressing his thoughts about Marvel’s What If…? Season 3. In a series of recent social media posts, he expressed “#whatif season 3, oh boy, just yikes”. He followed up by saying, “I’d enjoy watching more to provide feedback on potential improvements, but I have some water to watch boil instead.
In a surprising turn of events, DeMayo didn’t stop at critiquing the content of Season 3 of What If…?, instead, he publicly criticized the show’s executive producers by name!
In one post, DeMayo stated that this is the period when AC Bradley handed over control to Chauncey in relation to Marvel Studios Animation’s creative shifts, which led to Matthew Chauncey replacing AC Bradley as writer and showrunner for Season 1 and 2 of “What If…?”. It’s worth noting that Chauncey is now taking over from DeMayo as head writer for Season 3 of “X-Men ’97”, which might explain the critical comments DeMayo made about “What If…? Season 3”. This critique appears to be influenced by some personal concerns on DeMayo’s part.
Previously, the producer of the “X-Men ’97” series shared insights about creative challenges he faced, expressing humorously about conflicting advice on intricate storytelling: “Marvel and Chauncey criticized my interwoven time jumps across early episodes due to it being ‘too complex,'” DeMayo commented. “However, complexity and depth were exactly what this show #whatif required,” he continued, pointing out that the latest season of “What If…?” seems lacking in depth compared to his original vision, with dialogues feeling simplistic and predictable, and some storylines appearing odd or fan-fiction-like.
Disregarding any potential bias Beau DeMayo might hold in this case, it’s important to acknowledge his viewpoint that What If…? Season 3 has experienced a significant decrease in quality. This observation isn’t unique to DeMayo, as the excitement surrounding Season 3 has noticeably decreased compared to Season 2. Critiques from fans about lackluster episode ideas and storylines have been prevalent in responses to What If…? Season 3, and this appears to be the same opinion that DeMayo is expressing.
In the past year, Beau DeMayo’s name has made significant news, following his dismissal from Marvel Studios Animation’s X-Men ’97 project due to accusations of misconduct that remain somewhat vague. Since then, he has been active on social media, showing no fear in countering Disney/Marvel with his own claims of toxic work environment and discrimination.
In a recent outburst, DeMayo fired back at criticism towards What If…? Season 3. He specifically contested statements made by director Bryan Andrews, who suggested that the lack of more mutant characters in the season was due to unawareness about the ongoing Disney-Fox deal (completed in 2019). DeMayo asserted that this claim was false, stating, “They were definitely aware of the rights… We had conversations. Absolutely nonsense. Once again, just liars.” He further added that Marvel Studios approached his X-Men team about potential characters for What If…? Season 3 and suggested using a character from What If #12 (1990), implying this was similar to the misinformation surrounding T’Challa.
This recent statement brings us back to a PR battle surrounding the X-Men ’97 series: In its first season, Black Panther made an appearance, but it was actually King T’Chaka, T’Challa’s father, who was portrayed. Some fans felt this cameo should have referenced Chadwick Boseman, the actor from the Black Panther movie. However, DeMayo had to remain silent until his NDA agreement with Marvel expired before addressing the issue. Now that he has spoken up, it appears that DeMayo has been highlighting how Disney/Marvel often manipulates public narratives through PR tactics – much like in the case of his dismissal. However, this time, it seems DeMayo is also trying to establish a clear distinction between his work on X-Men ’97 and what viewers might expect when Season 3 airs – since if What If…? is any indication, there could be a noticeable drop in quality by then.
