As a devoted fan of horror, I am absolutely thrilled by the news that Bill Skarsgård will be reprising his chilling role as Pennywise for the upcoming Max series, “It: Welcome to Derry.” This man has truly mastered the art of portraying terrifying characters, from Pennywise to Count Orlok in “Nosferatu.” His performances are so intense that I can’t help but feel a shiver down my spine just thinking about it.
What makes this even more exciting is the fact that Skarsgård will also be executive producing the series. This means we’re not just getting more Pennywise, but we’re getting a deeper dive into Derry and its horrors. And let me tell you, after seeing what happened in “It” and “It Chapter Two,” I can’t wait to see what other terrifying secrets Derry has been hiding!
I must admit, when I first heard that Skarsgård was returning as Pennywise, I thought he might have had enough of the dancing clown. But it seems that the close bond between Skarsgård and the Muschiettis (who are executive producing the series) has convinced him to return for more. And I, for one, am grateful for that!
To end on a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder if Pennywise will be as excited about his return as Skarsgård seems to be. After all, who knows what kind of mischief the dancing clown will get up to when no one is looking? Perhaps we’ll even see him try to organize a horror version of a Zoom call with all the other famous movie monsters! Now that would be a sight to behold!
In a chat with Josh Horowitz on his “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Bill Skarsgard, who stars as Pennywise in “It” and its sequel “It Chapter Two,” revealed fresh details about Max’s upcoming series “It: Welcome to Derry.” The actor, who is set to reprise his role as the terrifying clown and will also serve as an executive producer for the series, hinted that Pennywise will continue to be as frightening and brutal as viewers have come to expect. Readers of Stephen King’s popular novel and filmgoers will recall Pennywise’s gruesome actions such as tearing off young Georgie’s arm and brutally devouring other children, frequently after luring them into trust with his shapeshifting abilities. As Skarsgard put it, the horror in “It: Welcome to Derry” will still be quite intense.
The actor firmly emphasized on maintaining an adult-oriented tone for the prequel series as Horowitz quipped that It: Welcome to Derry won’t be a family-friendly version of Pennywise. Skarsgård responded, “Absolutely not.” or “Skarsgård confirmed the need for an R-rated tone in the prequel series when Horowitz suggested that It: Welcome to Derry would not be a kid-friendly Pennywise, with Skarsgård stating firmly, ‘No’.
Recently, I found myself taking on the chilling role of the legendary horror figure, Count Orlok, in Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu”. This Gothic horror masterpiece made a staggering entrance over Christmas Day and its subsequent weekend, setting a new record for the biggest Christmas premiere for a genre film, pushing aside Robert Rodriguez’s 1998 sci-fi horror “The Faculty” from its throne. In an interview with Horowitz, I admitted that my journey with Pennywise felt conclusive after the films, and “Nosferatu” served as the final nail, so to speak, in my monster roles.
Instead of going back to being friends with Pennywise, Skarsgård chose to hesitate due to his close ties with directors Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti. They are collaborating on “It: Welcome to Derry” alongside Skarsgård, with Andy planning to direct four episodes of the prequel series.
Skarsgård expressed that he found it enjoyable while talking about his experience on “It: Welcome to Derry”. He admitted that he enjoyed it more than expected, particularly parts where they delved into unexplored aspects of old Pennywise. He added that this exploration was exciting. He also recalled the pleasure of working with Andy and shared that they had a good time together. He hinted at some intriguing elements yet to be seen that he’s eager for viewers to watch and hopefully enjoy.
Skarsgård mentioned that he effortlessly slips back into the voice of Pennywise, stating, “Oh yes, he’s always ready.
In 2025, the series “Derry” – which warmly welcomes you – will debut on Max. The cast includes Madeleine Stowe, Stephen Rider, Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and James Remar, as previously mentioned. Jason Fuchs (“Argylle”) and Brad Caleb Kane (“Extinction”) share the role of co-showrunners.
It (2017) is available to stream on Max.
