As a long-time Marvel Comics enthusiast who has traversed the vast multiverse of alternate realities numerous times, I must say that the latest season of “What If…?” has truly outdone itself with its portrayal of Storm as Goddess of Thunder. Alison Sealy-Smith’s captivating performance breathes new life into one of my all-time favorite characters, and her chemistry with the rest of the Guardians of the Multiverse is nothing short of electrifying.
The episode serves as a testament to Storm’s resilience and adaptability, showcasing how she seamlessly transitions from weather manipulator to Goddess of Thunder in this particular reality. The writers have done an excellent job weaving together elements from various storylines, including the Lifedeath saga and Storm’s time in Asgard, while still keeping it fresh and engaging for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
One cannot discuss the episode without mentioning the intriguing alternate realities presented throughout the series. The “What If…?” format allows the writers to explore various scenarios that challenge our understanding of these beloved characters, and I find myself consistently amazed by their creativity and ingenuity. The idea of Rogue wielding Thor’s hammer is particularly intriguing, as it offers a unique twist on her character development while also paying homage to the source material.
In closing, let me share a little joke that always makes me chuckle when I think about Storm and Thor: “What did Storm say to Thor when she asked for a dance? ‘Let’s storm the dance floor!'” It may not be the most original joke, but it never fails to bring a smile to my face. Keep up the fantastic work, Marvel! I can’t wait to see what other surprises await us in the next season of “What If…?
In the third season of the animated series “What If…?”, we find Storm, played by Alison Sealy-Smith from both “X-Men: The Animated Series” and “X-Men ’97”, joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this version of events, she becomes the Goddess of Thunder and Mistress of Cosmic Elements. Alongside Captain Carter (Helen Sadler), Kahhori (Devery Jacobs), and Byrdie (Natasha Lyonne), Storm is one of the Guardians of the Multiverse. Wielding the enchanted hammer Mjølnir, she protects this reality under the watchful eye of Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright). In other words, in this alternate universe, we discover that Storm isn’t the only X-Man to wield Thor’s hammer.
However, within an endless tapestry of potential realities and countless worlds, there are indeed other mutants who have proven themselves worthy to wield Mjolnir, the hammer bearing the inscription:
This is a simple rephrasing that maintains the original meaning while using more natural language. The phrase “multiverse of endless possibilities and infinite realities” is replaced with “endless tapestry of potential realities and countless worlds,” which conveys a similar sense of vastness and variety. Similarly, “have been worthy” is replaced with “who have proven themselves worthy,” adding a touch of formality to the sentence while keeping it easy to read. The phrase “inscribed with the words” is kept as-is for clarity.
“Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.”
Storm: Goddess of Thunder
In 1984, during the Uncanny X-Men #185, Storm temporarily lost her mutant abilities when government agent Peter Henry Gyrich used a neutralizer gun designed by Forge. This event led to the Lifedeath storyline, later depicted in X-Men ’97. In 1985’s New Mutants Special Edition #1, Loki, the trickster god and Thor’s half-brother, enlisted the Enchantress to abduct Storm. This was part of his plan for revenge against the X-Men, whom he had previously thwarted in X-Men/Alpha Flight #1-2.
Enchanted by Loki’s gift of Freya’s cloak adorned with golden feathers, Ororo – much like Thor – found herself captivated by the ability to manipulate the elements. This magical bestowal allowed her to once more soar through the skies as the wind-riding Storm, akin to a falcon.
In the storyline of “X-Men Annual” #9, the deceptive god intended for Storm to replace Thor as the Goddess of Thunder and help him ascend as ruler of Asgard. To empower her, he granted her a hammer imbued with abilities similar to her mutant powers, which was called Stormcaster. However, when Storm discovered that the god of deceit had manipulated her into attacking her X-Men teammates, almost fatally wounding Wolverine with Asgardian lightning from her hammer, she relinquished her powers and reverted back to a human on Earth.
In a different timeline stemming from the year 1990’s, as depicted in “What If” #12 (“What If the X-Men Had Stayed in Asgard?”), Storm chose to stay in Asgard instead. She played a pivotal role in overthrowing the Goddess of Death, Hela. Unlike before, Thor relinquished his claim to the throne and instead bestowed it upon the newly crowned ruler – the Goddess of Thunder. This means that Storm now rules Asgard as its sovereign.
Rogue: The Mighty Mutant
1994’s issue #66 of “What If…?” posed the question: “What if Rogue had the strength of Thor?” In this alternate reality, Rogue from the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants took on the powers of Ms. Marvel, Captain America, and eventually, Thor. After depriving Thor of his divine abilities, Rogue eliminated Earth’s most powerful heroes. With her newfound might, she was even able to wield Thor’s enchanted hammer.
In accordance with Odin’s command, his loyal warriors (Sif, Fandral, Hogun, Volstagg, and Balder) were dispatched to Earth. Meanwhile, Loki sneaked the transformed Rogue into Asgard for a power grab against Odin. However, remorseful Rogue, who remembered her past through Thor, betrayed Loki and, claiming her true heritage as Odin’s daughter, assumed the role of Earth’s new Goddess of Thunder, wielding immense mutant powers. Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, was rewritten to recognize this change in leadership.
“Whosoever holds this hammer, if he — or she — be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.”
The X-Corps
In the year 2015, the comic book series Secret Wars depicted the destruction of the multiverse. As a result, the God Emperor Doom created Battleworld, a planet made from remnants of destroyed worlds. When She-Hulk gathered A-Force, a team consisting of Captain Marvel, Medusa, Nico Minoru, and Singularity, they encountered an alternate version of their ally Alison Blaire, who was known as Dazzler Thor.
Dazzler had been tasked with apprehending A-Force for offenses against Doom, but she ultimately chose to team up with the heroes to vanquish the mutant sorceress Countess. Furthermore, A-Force encountered members of Doom’s Thor Corps, who were X-Men Nightcrawler and Colossus, both possessing Mjolnir.
