As someone who’s been gaming since the days of the original PlayStation, I can confidently say that 2024 has been a banner year for some truly exceptional developers. Among them, one that stood out to me is Game Science with their game Black Myth: Wukong.
I’ve seen my fair share of action RPGs, but none have captured the essence of Chinese mythology quite like this gem. The fluid combat system, the intricate level design, and the breathtaking visuals all come together to create an experience that’s nothing short of magical. It’s a game that feels both fresh and familiar at the same time, which is no easy feat.
That being said, I must admit that I’ve also been quite captivated by Shift Up’s Stellar Blade. The fast-paced action, coupled with the unique mechanics of the swordplay, make for a game that keeps me on my toes. It’s a challenging game, to be sure, but it’s one that rewards patience and skill in equal measure.
In a year filled with fantastic games, these two stood out to me. But hey, who am I to judge? After all, I still haven’t figured out why anyone thought it was a good idea to put a banana in a boxing glove… or why that ever worked!
In addition to our “Game of the Year” top 10 list and the team’s personal choices from Push Square, we are honoring the standout games on PlayStation 5 in various categories this year. Today, we will be highlighting the most outstanding PS5 developer of 2024.
Bronze Trophy: Team Asobi (Astro Bot)
As a dedicated fan, I’ve been blown away by Team Asobi’s incredible evolution in crafting outstanding platform games, such as Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Astro’s Playroom. But with the release of Astro Bot, they truly outdid themselves, creating one of the greatest PlayStation platformers ever made. This game not only showcases their exceptional skills but also pays homage to numerous beloved characters that have shaped the iconic status of the PlayStation brand over its 30-year journey.
Astro Bot was undeniably one of the standout games of 2024, but Team Asobi didn’t rest on their laurels: since its release, they’ve even added free speedrunning levels to keep us engaged and eager for more. Now, it’s clear that Astro Bot has firmly earned his place as one of the PlayStation mascots, boasting an industry-leading game under his belt — a true champion!
Silver Trophy: Bloober Team (Silent Hill 2)
Given their past projects such as Layers of Fear, Observer, and The Medium, many skeptics questioned whether Bloober Team could pull off a remarkable Silent Hill 2 remake. The pre-release footage seemed to validate those doubts, leading most fans to anticipate an underwhelming outcome.
Initially, I was thrilled when intriguing previews emerged, even one from us. And then came the reviews, again with our input. Many questioned the abilities of Bloober Team, but they astoundingly delivered one of the finest video game remakes ever, meticulously reviving a horror classic. Looking at the final outcome, it’s astonishing that anyone doubted their capabilities in the first place – the Polish studio undeniably aced the project. Frankly, I couldn’t be more ecstatic to have been so incredibly wrong.
Gold Trophy: Arrowhead Studios (Helldivers 2)
This year, Arrowhead Studios took a small, obscure IP called Helldivers and turned it into one of the most popular multiplayer games out there with the sequel. People didn’t see this coming, but with over 12 million copies sold, it’s now the fastest-selling game in PlayStation history. Since its launch ten months ago, there have been a few hiccups, such as the account issue on PC, but overall, Arrowhead Studios has significantly boosted their online presence and built a devoted following of Helldivers players.
It’s possible to contend that the game may well be due for an update or expansion by this point, but the frequent studio updates and ongoing social media buzz within the universe have kept fans engaged. The release of Helldivers 2 in 2024 has been a significant event, with Arrowhead Studios leading the charge.
Platinum Trophy: Atlus (Metaphor ReFantazio, Persona 3 Reload, and SMT V: Vengeance)
2024 seemed to be a breakthrough year for Atlus, as they soared to new heights in the JRPG genre. They not only introduced a fresh IP, Metaphor: ReFantazio, which is a strong candidate for Game of the Year, but also remade a beloved classic, Persona 3, and upgraded Shin Megami Tensei V for a broader audience. Their output that year was impressive, with each release showcasing exceptional quality. Interestingly, just a few months after the launch, they even released an expansion pack, Episode Aigis, for Persona 3 Reload.
2024 was an exceptional year for gaming, particularly when it came to Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs), as Atlus consistently delivered top-tier titles. The releases were spaced out in such a way that you could practically play one after another without much interruption, making other games seem almost irrelevant. There was no need for redemption or significant post-launch support, as Atlus had already proven their prowess with one hit after another in 2024 – each game showcasing the highest quality JRPGs, and for that, they truly deserve recognition.
