As a child of the late ’90s and early 2000s, I vividly remember the thrill of collecting Digimon cards and watching the animated series with my friends after school. The excitement we felt when a new season was announced or a new card set released was unparalleled. Fast forward to today, and it’s fascinating to see how the franchise has evolved over the years, yet still manages to maintain its charm and relevance.

The upcoming Year of the Snake and the 25th anniversary of Digimon Adventure 02 have me reminiscing about those days gone by, but also filled with anticipation for what’s in store for the franchise in 2025. The new promo image featuring Sandiramon, Coatlmon, and Paildramon takes me back to my childhood, and I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over me.

The Lunar New Year, a traditional celebration in East Asian nations, usually occurs around a few weeks after New Year’s Eve. Each Lunar New Year corresponds to one of the Chinese Zodiacs, making 2025 the Year of the Snake. In Digimon Tamers, the franchise has used the Chinese Zodiac, with the twelve malevolent Devas modeled after the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Sandiramon was the snake Deva that the tamers confronted in the series.

Bandai is commemorating the Chinese Year of the Snake by releasing a vibrant image featuring Sandiramon, Coatlmon, and Paildramon. Coatlmon, being one of the armor evolutions for the Digi-Egg of Light, is a snake-type Digimon. Contrary to Coatlmon, Paildramon who dominates the new promotional material, is not a snake. Instead, he’s a dragon-type Digimon equipped with machine guns on his waist. The prominence of Paildramon serves as a hint for the upcoming 25th anniversary of Digimon Adventure 02, which will take place in 2025. Although the specifics about the franchise’s plans for the Adventure 02 anniversary are not yet known, this New Year’s promo is giving it a head start.

Bandai has also introduced an ongoing Webtoon comic series titled “Digimon Liberator,” which is based on the cards.
