In the upcoming season of Grantchester, both Robson Green and Tom Brittney will reappear. However, it’s only for a short while for Tom Brittney, as a fresh vicar is set to make an appearance in the village.
Back in 2023, Britteny made the announcement that he would be departing from the detective drama, a choice he later described as the most difficult one he’s ever had to make in his life.
In the upcoming cast, we have Rishi Nair, who will portray the third vicar in the series, named Reverend Alphy Kotteram. Preceding him are Brittney as Will Davenport and James Norton as Sidney Chambers.
Viewers might feel apprehensive over such a significant transformation of the series, an acknowledgment shared by its creator, Daisy Coulam. However, she’s also offered comfort by stating that they’ve selected an ideal candidate in Nair for the role.
As a seasoned film enthusiast who has witnessed countless transformations in the industry, I must admit that change, though inevitable, is indeed a source of constant apprehension. The emotional bond between characters and actors on screen is often so profound that it’s challenging to imagine replicating such authenticity. It’s not just about the acting skills; it’s about capturing the essence of a story that transcends the boundaries of celluloid, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. This fear of losing the magic is something I believe every filmmaker grapples with at some point in their career.
In the course of our television journey, fortune has certainly smiled upon us. First with James Norton, then with Tom, and I dare say, a divine hand seems to guide us in this production. Somehow, we managed to strike gold not just twice but thrice. It’s safe to say that from the very audition, we clicked, which made our luck even sweeter.
After that, Green commented: “It was genuinely fascinating. I encountered Tom, and there was an immediate connection. And then when Rishi joined us, before we went into the room, I stepped outside for a chat. We discussed Manchester United, his favorite team, given he’s from Liverpool [laughs]. We also chatted about Newcastle, and surprisingly, he knew more about my team than I did.
“But there was just some shorthand there that you can’t quantify, it’s just there and it walks into the room, and there you are, and you start speaking and immediately there is a chemistry. That’s why they call it a chemistry read. There’s a chemistry there that’s likeable, and I think that’s one of the headlines about Grantchester, it’s incredibly likeable.
The bond I’ve formed with Rishi is truly remarkable, both on-camera and off, and everyone at the helm, along with our exceptional crew, share in this delight.”
This version maintains the original sentiment while using more conversational language for a smoother read.
