Clive is not just Noctis 2.0; he’s a mid-distance king with a unique playstyle that demands respect on the battlefield. His forward 1+2 and downforward 2 are his strongest threats, making him a formidable opponent across the stage. However, he’s not built for close-up slap fights, so keep your distance!
One of the key aspects of this Tekken 8 Clive Guide is learning his stances and Phoenix shift. Nearly all his moves have the option to shift into Phoenix, and you should learn them by heart. Back 2 into shift is great because the distance is solid and safe on block. With that, we can easily hit confirm into a shift. Also, we can get a guaranteed shift with one follow-up.
From shift, we have a low 3, armored 1, and volley 2. Shifting into one can catch off players who have a taste for your shift patterns. But really, shifting into 2 is your safest bet, as it can switch from 2,1 to 1+2, also giving us floor smash and Zanketsu.
Zanketsu is a unique mechanic that builds up during the fight, allowing you to unleash devastating combos with the right timing. It’s a metered bar that goes up to 5, and by using Odin sword moves (ff2 and shift, 2, 1+2), we build the meter gradually over the rounds and release it by hitting 1+4. The more we build the bar, the more damage it does, with one being low and 5 the highest.
However, the trade-off for building Zanketsu is that it only does chip damage. So if you hit a player with Odin sword combos, they have the potential to regain it all back with a heat dash. It’s not vital to focus on at the start, but if you have a couple of rounds ahead, then I would say think of building it. Do a couple of safe Odins throughout so you get at least a 3-level and the option to use it.
But remember, stay out of close range! If Clive gets too close, he’ll turn you into a chocobo faster than you can say “Ifrit.” And if all else fails, just tell your opponent that their mother plays better Tekken than they do – that usually puts a smile on my face.

Consequently, his gameplay style is characterized by flair and pizzazz, designed not only to captivate us with his character but also to entice us into exploring more about the game itself.
In reality, he became a dominating force in mid-distance events. His moves, such as forward 1+2 and downforward 2, make him an incredibly formidable opponent to watch out for throughout the competition.
Instead of engaging in close-up brawls or small-scale fights like Tekken, he’s more suited to capitalizing on mid-range opportunities such as whiff punishes, counters, and transitioning into flashy combinations and stance switches.
Next, be familiar with this character’s views and his unique Phoenix transformation. It’s essential to memorize that most of his moves offer the option to transform into Phoenix, and you should know them thoroughly. The back 2 into shift is particularly effective because it provides a decent and secure distance on block, making it easier for us to hit confirm into a shift. Additionally, with a single follow-up move, we can guarantee a shift.

In particular, I’ve grown fond of the metered bar that goes up to 5 in certain games, which builds up during the fight. Using specific move combinations like Odin sword moves (ff2 and shift, 2, 1+2) helps me gradually build this meter over rounds. The excitement of releasing it by hitting 1+4 is unparalleled, adding an extra layer of strategy to the gameplay that keeps me coming back for more. It’s a small detail, but it significantly enhances my overall gaming experience and makes each match feel fresh and dynamic.
As we construct the barrier, its destructive impact increases, with ‘1’ being minimal and ‘5’ representing maximum harm. However, be aware that with certain combinations, its destructive power can skyrocket beyond 130!
While constructing Zanketsu offers an advantage, it’s important to note that its primary function is to inflict chip damage. This means that if you attack a player with Odin sword combos, they have the ability to recover most or all of their lost health by executing a heat dash.
Instead of referring to this as a “comeback mechanic,” let’s call it a “steamroller mechanic.” It seems that very few players have built or used it against me so far. However, the one player who did managed to inflict 110 damage with just a basic combo using it.
Initially, it’s not essential to prioritize this, but if you have several turns coming up, I’d recommend considering the development of it. Make sure to execute a few secure moves to reach a minimum depth of three levels and retain the ability to utilize it.
