As someone who has been following Gavin & Stacey since its inception, I must say that the fishing trip mystery has always been a delightful enigma. The infamous event, shrouded in suspense and intrigue, has become a hallmark of the show’s humor and charm.
The latest teaser, though brief, was a welcome treat for fans like me who have eagerly anticipated any hint about that fateful night. The footage, reminiscent of an old VHS recording, added a nostalgic touch that made it even more enticing.
Jason’s youthful exuberance and Bryn’s ever-present eccentricity were beautifully captured, leaving us hanging on the edge of our seats, waiting for what comes next. The fact that the events remain a mystery only adds to the anticipation, making the fishing trip an enduring symbol of the show’s unique humor.
And as for the joke, well, I suppose we can all agree that if Bryn and Jason ever revealed what really happened on that trip, it would be the end of the joke itself – and no one wants that! After all, laughter is the best fishing rod, and this mystery has reeled us in many times over the years.
It’s been more than a week now since the final episode of Gavin & Stacey aired on Christmas Day, and it has proven to be an enormous hit among viewers, as they were treated to numerous familiar faces and references to the series’ history.
Every time I sit down to watch our favorite show, it’s inevitable – another nod to Bryn and Jason’s legendary fishing escapade pops up again on the screen. Alas, those who were hoping for a definitive explanation of what transpired that ominous, fateful night were left hanging.
In addition, enthusiasts have recently been granted an additional sneak peek regarding this matter, as the very first clip of the actual fishing trip was shown towards the end of the newly released retrospective documentary titled “Gavin & Stacey: A Heartfelt Goodbye.
Towards the closing moments of the hour-long documentary that was broadcasted on New Year’s Day, following James Corden and Ruth Jones’ farewell to their adoring fans as they signed off from their cherished sitcom forever, fresh footage unexpectedly emerged, mimicking an old archive video recording.
The video shows a youthful-looking character portrayed by Robert Wilfort, casually seated on a verdant hillside near a river, with a fishing pole in his hand. In the distance, Rob Brydon’s character, Bryn, can be heard saying, “Look who we have here!”, as Jason acknowledges the camera with a friendly wave.

In another angle, we find Jason standing, displaying a big fish he’s just reeled in, as Bryn exclaims: “Wow, check this out! Lift it up, Jase, lift it up for me!
In the following frame, the camera is positioned, capturing Bryn and Jason, who are now visible along with a fish they’re displaying near their tent. Bryn then exclaims, “There won’t be any hunger in our camp tonight.
Next, Jason’s actions shift to preparing fish on a stove, all the while sipping from a can of beer. At this juncture, Bryn inquires about his satisfaction with the soup. The recording then concludes abruptly, leaving the subsequent trip events undisclosed and intriguing.
During a press preview prior to its broadcast on BBC One, Wilfort explained to fans why certain aspects needed to stay a secret, stating, “I’ve always maintained that the secret behind the fishing trip is never revealed!
Apologies all around, however, the humor in this particular instance has consistently been its mystery. It’s more amusing kept as such. I’m glad we managed to maintain the enigma since we’ve never uncovered its secret ourselves.
