Neil Young pulls out of Glastonbury 2025 over BBC involvement – claims festival “now under corporate control”

As a seasoned music enthusiast and someone who has attended numerous festivals over the years, I can understand Neil Young’s sentiment about Glastonbury’s shift towards corporate control. I remember the days when Glastonbury was known for its grassroots charm and counterculture vibe, and it’s a bit disheartening to see it change.

However, I also realize that festivals have to evolve with the times, and partnerships with broadcasters like the BBC can help bring the music to a wider audience. But if these collaborations come at the cost of compromising an artist’s creative freedom, then perhaps it’s not the right move.

Neil Young has always been a maverick in the music industry, and his decision to turn down Glastonbury 2025 shows his commitment to artistic integrity. I respect his stance and hope that other artists will follow suit if they feel their creative vision is being compromised.

On a lighter note, I guess we’ll just have to settle for watching Neil Young performances on YouTube instead of at Glastonbury – but hey, at least we can pause and rewind whenever we want!

As a die-hard film enthusiast, I must share some disappointing news: yours truly, Neil Young, has made a difficult choice to skip the Glastonbury Festival of 2025. The reason behind this heartbreaking decision lies in the festival’s collaboration with the BBC – a partnership that simply doesn’t align with my personal convictions.

On his personal website, the Canadian-American musician publicly announced that he and his group, Chrome Hearts, will not perform at the Worthy Farm festival, detailing the reasons behind their decision.

Chrome Hearts and I had been eager to perform at Glastonbury, one of my long-cherished outdoor concerts,” Young wrote. “However, we learned that BBC is now involved with Glastonbury, and they wanted us to do things that didn’t align with our preferences.

It appears that Glastonbury has been taken over by corporations, which isn’t the same as my previous memories of it. Thank you for joining us in our last visit!

I regret to say that I won’t be gracing the stage at Glastonbury during this tour. It seems the event has taken a more corporate direction, which doesn’t resonate with me as it once did. However, I look forward to connecting with you all at one of the other venues on the tour instead!

As of now, it hasn’t been verified that Young will perform at Glastonbury 2025; however, the only artist officially confirmed for the event so far is Rod Stewart.

Additionally, it’s been speculated that many other artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Rihanna, and Ed Sheeran might perform, while Nile Rodgers hinted at his presence with his band Chic during a speech at the Rolling Stone awards in November 2024.

Since 1997, the BBC has collaborated with the Glastonbury Festival, and Young last graced its stages in 2009, where he was the main act on the iconic Pyramid stage.

Some portions of his performance were broadcasted by BBC, as they mentioned that they had been in discussions with Young’s representatives over the past couple of months.

In a statement made in 2009, the broadcaster expressed that Neil Young’s career has been self-directed. His management consented to air five songs during his performance on TV and radio, as they appreciated the live event and wished to preserve its enigma, along with that of their artist.
