As a lifelong gamer who has grown up with Sony consoles, I couldn’t be more relieved to hear Hideaki Nishino’s words about the future of gaming consoles. The nostalgia of plugging in a fresh PlayStation cartridge or sliding a shiny disc into my console is something that can never truly be replicated by a PC or cloud gaming experience.
The expansion of titles available on PS5 and the constant success of PS4 games are clear signs that Sony is still at the forefront of the gaming industry. The fact that they’re even considering making their games available on PC shows just how dedicated they are to ensuring as many players as possible can enjoy their creations.
I must admit, I did have a moment of concern when Sony started experimenting with cloud gaming and simultaneous cross-platform releases. But after seeing the success of the PlayStation Portal and hearing Nishino’s comments, I’m confident that Sony won’t be abandoning the traditional console experience anytime soon.
And let me tell you, if they ever try to replace my DualShock controller with a keyboard and mouse, they’ll have a fight on their hands! (Just kidding, Sony. Keep up the good work!)
According to Sony Interactive Entertainment Platform Business Group CEO Hideaki Nishino, it’s unlikely that gaming consoles will disappear from the scene in the coming years. In a conversation with Famitsu, he discusses the anticipated evolution of the console gaming market and shares his insights on its future trends.
As a dedicated gamer myself, I can’t help but notice the surge of excitement around PlayStation consoles, particularly the success of PS4 games and the ever-growing library on the PS5. It’s clear that gamers like me are eagerly embracing these gaming platforms!
Currently, a large number of games on PS4 are being enjoyed, and the amount of PS5 games is growing rapidly. It’s not expected to switch things up drastically overnight, so it’s clear that home gaming consoles will continue to play a significant role in our operations for a while. (Said by Nishino)
Nishino further discusses how the shape and size of gaming consoles tend to evolve over time, noting the increasing variety of desktop gaming systems available, along with their diverse designs. Additionally, he highlights the growing popularity of cloud-based gaming services, such as the PlayStation Portal, implying that there remains a demand for specialized gaming equipment among enthusiasts.
Considering this aspect, Nishino additionally believes that an increase in gamers utilizing their PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts on personal computers for games such as “Helldivers 2” serves as a method for Sony to expand the reach of its game titles among more players.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m constantly pondering ways to expand our PlayStation community. With more PC gamers and various styles joining the fray, I’m brainstorming strategies to attract even more folks to the PSN (PlayStation Network).
While it might be misconstrued by some, the simultaneous use of cloud gaming on PS Portal alongside PS5 games could give the impression that we’ve already stepped into the age of cloud gaming. Yet, it’s important to note that a controller and screen are still essential. We don’t foresee hardware becoming obsolete anytime soon.
Over the past few years, I’ve been thoroughly impressed by Sony’s dedication to bringing some of their classic games to my PC setup. Titles like God of War Ragnarok, Ghost of Tsushima, and Horizon Forbidden West have graced my screen, and it’s not just single-player experiences they’re offering. They’ve been dabbling with cross-platform releases for multiplayer games too, such as Helldivers 2 from last year, which landed on both PC and PS5 at the same time. However, shortly after its release, there was a bit of a stir concerning the mandatory linking of PSN accounts (something Sony eventually reconsidered).
It’s important to mention that Sony opted not to port its newer PlayStation 5 games to PC, preferring to delay their arrival by about a year or two instead. For instance, games like God of War Ragnarok were initially released on the PS5 and didn’t come to PC until two years later. The latest example is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which launched on January 30th, approximately 15 months after its PS5 debut.
In contrast to cloud gaming, Sony’s PlayStation Portal has thrived due to its capability to stream PS5 titles without sacrificing aspects like DualSense features and high-definition visuals. Furthermore, Sony grants PlayStation Plus subscribers access to stream a selection of games from past console generations.
