As a tech enthusiast with years of experience working with various Microsoft devices and accessories, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I learn about Incase bringing back the cancelled Compact Ergonomic Keyboard, originally designed by Microsoft. This keyboard was one of the last great PC accessories that Microsoft produced before discontinuing its line, leaving many of us who appreciated their ergonomic design and quality craftsmanship in the lurch.
I’ve been using Microsoft keyboards for years now, and I must admit that they have always provided a comfortable typing experience with their unique split keyboard layout and key travel. The news that Incase is bringing back this design, complete with the new Copilot key and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity, has me excited to try it out.
However, at $119.99, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sticker shock. As much as I love Microsoft-designed accessories, that price point is steep for a plastic Bluetooth keyboard. But if you value the “designed by Microsoft” aesthetic and are looking for a compact ergonomic keyboard with a modern design and long battery life, it may be worth the investment.
I’m also intrigued by Incase’s plans to launch more accessories designed by Microsoft in the coming months, including mice, keyboards, and audio accessories. If they can maintain the quality that Microsoft is known for, these new products could become staples in my tech setup.
On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder if Microsoft will ever bring back their iconic Sculpt Comfort Mouse, which was my go-to mouse for years. If they do, maybe I’ll have to add it to my collection, along with this new Compact Ergonomic Keyboard!
In 2023, Microsoft decided to discontinue all their PC accessory products, which included well-liked items like ergonomic keyboards and mice. Later on, Incase took over this line and now, they’ve just introduced the first computer mice designed by Microsoft under the Incase brand.
The latest Incase add-ons share the same design as Microsoft’s, but sport the Incase logo instead. Today, Incase introduces a previously discontinued desktop keyboard that was halted from shipping when Microsoft ceased their PC production.
Referring to it as the Modern Split-Layout Ergonomic Keyboard, this latest gadget boasts a sleek modern design with a keyboard arrangement split in two, reminiscent of the Surface Ergonomic Keyboard, but devoid of the number pad and presented in black. It introduces the innovative Copilot key, can synchronize with up to three devices using Bluetooth 5.1 technology, and offers approximately 36 months of battery life.
As a researcher examining this compact keyboard, I’m struck by its diminutive size, measuring only 13-inches by 8.6-inches. Designed by the tech giant Microsoft, it seamlessly aligns with their current design aesthetic, harmonizing beautifully with the existing Surface lineup, featuring an identical key font and delivering a typing experience akin to the Surface portfolio, with a key travel of 1.3mm.
It seems that this keyboard was among the final PC accessories developed by Microsoft before they stopped marketing them under their own brand. Since then, it had been uncertain whether it would be released, but due to the collaboration between Microsoft and Incase, it is now back on sale.
The Compact Ergonomic Keyboard is set to hit the market within a few weeks, however, it won’t come at an affordable price point. Incase has announced that the keyboard will retail for $119.99, which is quite high for a plastic Bluetooth keyboard. For this price, you’re essentially paying for the “Microsoft-designed” look and feel.
Over the next few months, expect Microsoft to unveil a host of new accessories designed by Incase. These include more comfortable mice, updated keyboard designs from their older models, and some audio equipment as well. If you have a fondness for Microsoft’s accessory line, these new Incase products will be right up your alley.
