As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has been following the DC universe since its early days, I must say that the latest episode of Creature Commandos has certainly not disappointed me! The way they seamlessly weave in elements from classic DC lore while adding their own unique twists is nothing short of impressive.
The backstory of Dr. Phosphorus, voiced brilliantly by Alan Tudyk, was particularly intriguing and dark, highlighting the tragic consequences of playing with nuclear secrets. The introduction of Rupert Thorne, a character with deep roots in Batman mythos, only underscores the importance of the Dark Knight in Gunn’s new cinematic universe.
The nods to iconic locations like Gotham and the Iceberg Lounge were delightful surprises that made me feel as if I was stepping into a familiar yet refreshed DC world. The cameo of Batman himself added an extra layer of excitement, while the presence of the Craic Brothers showcased the abundance of metahumans in this universe.
All in all, Creature Commandos is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows, and I can’t wait to see what other surprises they have in store for us fans. It seems that James Gunn and Peter Safran are doing a fantastic job of building an engaging DCU, one episode at a time!
Oh, and let me tell you, the dancing scene at the Iceberg Lounge had me laughing so hard I spilled my secret stash of Kryptonite! 😉
In episode 6 of Creature Commandos, each main character’s backstory is further explored through heart-wrenching flashbacks. A notable example is Dr. Phosphorus, whose transformation into a radioactive skeleton not only altered his physical form but also twisted his mind into a cold, sadistic being who revels in the pain and destruction of his adversaries. This episode’s dive into the past also unveils the DC Universe’s interpretation of Gotham City, which coincidentally appears just days after the mysterious delay of The Batman Part 2.
Though it’s unclear when the Dark Knight will first appear in the DCU’s live-action format, the upcoming movie Creature Commandos underscores Batman’s significance within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s fresh cinematic universe. There are numerous references to Batman lore woven throughout the storyline.
RIP Ruppert Thorn
In episode 6 of Creature Commandos, we’re introduced to Rupert Thorne, voiced by Benjamin Byron Davis, a character from the DC Universe. Here, Thorne finances the radiation research of Dr. Alexander James Sartorius in return for nuclear secrets he could profitably sell. However, when Alexander double-crosses Thorne, the ruthless Thorne retaliates by killing Sartorius’s family and imprisoning him within the radioactive machine built during his research. Contrary to expectation, Dr. Sartorius does not perish but instead transforms into the fiery green skeleton known as Dr. Phosphorus.
Initially, Dr. Phosphorus sets out to locate Thorne, a significant character in the Batman universe, and end his life along with Thorne’s family. This surprising turn of events is striking, given Thorne’s pivotal role in the Batman mythos. Thorne made his debut in 1977’s Detective Comics #469, created by Steve Englehart and Walter Simonson. Since then, he has been a prominent figure in Gotham’s criminal underworld. Furthermore, Thorne gained popularity among fans following his appearance in Batman: The Animated Series. The unexpected demise of Thorne emphasizes the lengthy tenure of Batman in Gotham, hinting at the emergence of metahumans and other familiar foes from the Dark Knight’s rogues gallery taking over the criminal scene.
Bialya Wants Nuclear Weapons
Alexander’s radiation research was focused on discovering a cancer cure, but instead, he sold these experiments to the nation of Bialya, which had an intense interest in nuclear weapons. As depicted in “Creature Commandos,” Bialya is ruled by an authoritarian regime, leading Alexander to attempt manipulating his research findings to avoid providing Bialya with nuclear capabilities, as he did not wish to bear responsibility for arming such a government.
In the world of DC Comics, the fictional country of Bialya is located in the Middle East and is governed by the malevolent Queen Bee, who employs mind-control technology for her own gain. The Blue Scarab, which has spawned several versions of Blue Beetle, was first discovered within Bialya’s borders, making it a pivotal location for one of DCU’s few officially recognized superheroes. Furthermore, Bialya is an integral aspect of the popular animated series Young Justice, produced by DC. Essentially, it’s delightful to discover that Gunn already has ideas for incorporating Bialya into the DC Universe.
Batman, Gotham, and the Iceberg Lounge
Thorne isn’t the sole Gotham character featured in Creature Commandos. Besides him, Batman briefly makes an appearance, apprehending Dr. Phosphorus following his transformation into one of Gotham’s crime lords. Moreover, the captivating dance sequence in Episode 6 unfolds at the Iceberg Lounge, a nightclub that serves as Penguin’s cover for his illicit activities. Given that Dr. Phosphorus can be seen relaxing at the Iceberg Lounge, it’s reasonable to infer that the Penguin plays a significant role within the DCU as the cunning mastermind who frequently collaborates with other supervillains.
Craic Brothers & Metahumans
In order to avoid capture by Pokolistan’s royal guard, The Bride (portrayed by Indira Varma) and Nina (played by Zoë Chao) seek refuge in a local establishment – a brothel. However, the night takes an unexpected turn as two of the brothel’s patrons, known as the Craic Brothers, assault a sex worker. To add to their troubles, these brothers possess unique abilities – they can discharge electricity.
In the vast universe of DC Comics, it’s quite normal to find metahumans, as evidenced by the presence of the Craic Brothers. So common, in fact, that their establishment has special regulations to accommodate this powerful segment of society. Although the Craic Brothers aren’t based on any particular comic book character, they contribute significantly to the development of the storyline. It’s said that even Superman grapples with the rising number of metahumans on Earth, which aligns with the occasional run-ins of the Creature Commandos with superpowered individuals.
New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
