Vera bows out in pitch perfect love letter to character – and leaves a lasting legacy

The much-loved detective character portrayed by Brenda Blethyn is no longer active in her iconic trench coat, marking the conclusion of this era.

In the last installment, Vera formed a bond with a girl who had gone missing and lived similarly secluded as Vera, prompting much introspection on the part of the Northumbrian investigator.

In contrast to the usual 14-year span of the ITV series, this particular episode ventured into Vera’s past more deeply. Instead of merely hinting at its impact on her life, it portrayed young Vera alongside her father Hector, revealing their complex relationship, which was certainly not simple by any means.

In the last episode, the primary emphasis was on resolving the mystery of The Dark Wives. However, after long anticipation, we were provided with a peek into Vera’s past, offering delicate and selective insights without diminishing her enigmatic persona.

Instead of making the last episode excessively emotional or revealing too much about Vera’s private life, which could have been an unkind distortion of the mysterious persona that Brenda Blethyn has skillfully created throughout her tenure as the character, it would have been wiser to maintain a balance.

Instead of those precious instances when Blethyn subtly conveyed Vera’s internal struggles through her expressions being wasted, it’s heartening that ITV provided a fitting tribute to our detective, as she deserved.

In the flashbacks, a well-crafted narrative succinctly depicted the kind of upbringing Vera experienced, without needing excessive elaboration. The concluding flashback portrayed the young girl assisting her father in building a fence, yet she grew restless because she had homework to attend to. When Hector questioned her actions, she disclosed her ambition to join the police force once she became older.

“Hector scoffed, saying that place wasn’t suitable for a girl. But Vera disagreed and he challenged her to show otherwise. After turning down a promotion, Vera found herself back in her long-held office within the Northumbrian police force. Indeed, she had proven him wrong.

After laying the lingering specter of her father’s criticism to rest, which had cast a shadow throughout the entire series, it was evidently the moment for her to step down and bask in the scenic splendor of Northumbria’s coastline, a place she’d tirelessly protected. To add to this, she found herself with a newfound companion – a stray dog who serendipitously wandered into her life, eventually earning a place in her secluded existence. This heartwarming development served as a fitting conclusion for our cherished detective Vera. Contrary to expectations, there was no lavish retirement bash for Vera; she would have shunned such an event.

The last episode was flawlessly executed, opting to conclude in a manner that Vera herself would have preferred: peacefully, subtly, and by wrapping up an enigmatic investigation. Moreover, it honored the stunning North East region where she can now spend her retirement leisurely. The finale showcased the captivating scenery that has engaged viewers for the past 14 years – a sight that drew Blethyn back to the series, ending with some heartwarming final shots.

For the first time, the North has never been portrayed so beautifully on screens; Vera has been a heartfelt ode to it, and the final episode served as a fitting conclusion. From the vibrant Newcastle Quayside to the untamed coastline, the enigmatic Northumbrian countryside shrouded in mystery, expansive farmland – Vera encapsulated the best of the North. Television will miss its absence.

In the spirit of Vera’s remarkable work, it is our fervent wish that future production crews draw inspiration from the vivid world she created, thereby nurturing and expanding the TV landscape in the north, building upon the lasting impact Vera has set in motion.

In an era dominated by short-lived TV shows, Vera’s longevity is noteworthy. Actress Brenda Blethyn breathed fresh life into the detective series, a remarkable achievement given the abundance of similar content. The production was imbued with genuine emotion and passion. Never before has a crime drama been so visually captivating, while maintaining compelling cases that leave viewers guessing the outcome. The cast and crew’s obvious affection for Vera is palpable, and this admiration seems to be reciprocated by the audience.

It will be a long time before we see another drama quite like Vera; we’ll miss you, pet.
