As a long-time movie enthusiast and someone who has witnessed the evolution of the film industry over the past few decades, I must say that this year’s lineup is truly remarkable. The diversity in genres, from sci-fi to musicals, and the caliber of talent involved in these projects is astounding.
What particularly excites me is the number of female-led films and collaborations between women in powerful roles, such as Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos’ adaptation of Save the Green Planet! or Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande reprising their roles from Wicked. It’s a testament to the growing influence of women in Hollywood and the demand for more diverse stories being told on the big screen.
That being said, I can’t help but be a little jealous of those who will get to witness these films in theatres first. As someone who has been stuck at home during the pandemic, I’ve had to resort to streaming services to satisfy my cinematic cravings. But hey, I guess it could always be worse – at least I don’t have to deal with the sticky floors and overpriced popcorn!
Just a heads up: We’ve limited this list to movies that have already been confirmed for UK release dates. Many more films are expected to be added to the schedule, which will premiere at film festivals before hitting cinemas later in the year. Notable directors like Wes Anderson, Kathryn Bigelow, and Darren Aronofsky are among those with upcoming releases.
Indeed, no list can claim to be exhaustive, and there are several upcoming franchise movies we haven’t included. These include sequels in the horror genre like Saw X, Megan 2.0, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, as well as live-action Disney remakes of Snow White and Lilo & Stitch, along with other franchise films.
One delightful aspect of cinema is always discovering lesser-known movies emerging unexpectedly, bringing joy throughout the year. Therefore, it’s quite possible that some of the most captivating films in the upcoming months remain unidentified to us currently.
But for now, read on for 25 films that we’re especially excited about in 2025..
