As a long-time PlayStation enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of gaming since the days of the original PlayStation, I can’t help but get excited about the potential revival of some classic IPs that Sony might be working on. The recent hints from Andy Robinson, a well-respected figure in the gaming industry, have sent the community into a frenzy of speculation and theory-crafting.
Personally, I’ve had a soft spot for Sly Cooper ever since I first played the game back in 2002. The series’ blend of stealth, platforming, and humor resonated with me, and it’s always been a disappointment that we haven’t seen more from our furry thief friend. However, given its relatively recent re-release on the PS Store, it might not be the “deep-cut” IP that Robinson was referring to.
But who knows? Maybe Sony is planning something special for Sly Cooper’s 20th anniversary next year. After all, they did give us a new Astrobot game as a love letter to their past, so anything is possible. I can just imagine the look on my cat’s face when I tell her that Sly Cooper might be making a comeback – she was always more of a Bentley fan anyway.
In the meantime, I’ll be keeping an eye on the latest developments and joining in on the discussions with fellow fans. Who knows? Maybe we’ll stumble upon some clues hidden in plain sight that will help us crack the code and uncover Sony’s next big surprise. Until then, I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed (and paws at the ready) for what the future holds for our favorite gaming franchises!
A recent gossip from Andy Robinson hints that Sony might be reviving old game series, some of which fans may not recall. The robot-themed game Astrobot by Sony could possibly indicate a comeback of one such series. With so many studios and IPs owned by Sony, this could mean almost anything. Whether this rumor will materialize or not remains to be seen, but interested parties can listen to The Video Game Podcast to hear more about Robinson’s discussion.
Andy Robinson mentioned that he isn’t personally involved but is aware of at least two projects they are currently developing. He referred to these as significant, older intellectual properties.
I was quite disappointed when Robinson didn’t delve into potential IPs that Sony might be developing, instead just mentioning they were working on smaller games. This has sparked a wave of fan speculation and debate, with many of us eagerly theorizing about which old IPs could make a comeback.
Among the initial ideas was the game titled “Sly Cooper“. This consideration became stronger after the original versions were added to the PS Store. The first version of “Sly Cooper” came out in 2002, which might exclude it from the “lesser-known” games mentioned by Robinson. However, “Sly Cooper” remains a popular choice among gamers, particularly with its rereleases and sequels. Therefore, it’s unlikely that “Sly Cooper” can be categorized as a smaller or less-known game.
Some people have suggested that we could see a comeback for either the Jak and Daxter series or even Ape Escape. Given that Ape Escape got its own level and various bots in Astrobot, it’s a plausible scenario. As for Jak and Daxter, although it has been available on the PlayStation store for some time, this doesn’t automatically mean it won’t return.
Despite some requesting it already, others have suggested the idea of a Gravity Rush movie, which is currently in production by Sony. To revive interest among gamers, they might consider a simultaneous release of both a cinematic adaptation and a new game installment for Gravity Rush around 2024.
An alternative title circulating is “Twisted Metal“, referencing the TV show and the shelved live-service game within the franchise. Although it seems unlikely for a new installment given the previous cancellation, it’s not entirely out of the question. Rumors suggest that the decision to cancel was prompted by layoffs rather than the game itself.

Speculating about which intellectual properties (IP) might return can certainly spark interesting conversations and revive memories of classic games. However, it’s important to remember that until Sony officially confirms anything, all such speculation remains merely a guess. Engaging in such discussions may fuel excitement among players, but it is essential to approach these rumors with caution as they might ultimately lead to disappointment.
Despite Astrobot’s continued success and the increased interest it has sparked in smaller series, there is immense potential for what Sony might select next. Predicting the titles that will receive this attention can be challenging, but passionate fans are undoubtedly brainstorming theories to guess which games Sony will focus on.
