As a lifelong Doctor Who enthusiast who has been following the show since its reboot in 2005, I must say that Steven Moffat’s writing for Joy to the World was nothing short of delightful. The spiritual undercurrent and clever use of convenience in the storyline were reminiscent of his earlier works like Blink and The Girl Who Waited.
The revelation that a scene featuring the Doctor using a room service tray to hack the lift system was cut is quite intriguing. It would have been a fun addition, demonstrating once again how our Time Lord can turn even the most mundane objects into powerful tools.
I’m left wondering what other gems were lost in the editing process and hope that one day we might see them resurface. After all, who knows what hidden treasures are lurking in the TARDIS?
As for Moffat potentially writing more Doctor Who episodes, I’d say it’s a bit like the Doctor himself – he’ll return when the universe needs him most! And on that note, I can’t help but wonder if the next time we see Moffat’s name attached to an episode, it will be for a special occasion like the show’s 60th anniversary. After all, you never know when the Doctor might show up with a sonic screwdriver and a witty one-liner!
The 2024 Doctor Who Christmas special, titled “Joy to the World,” was brimming with action – ranging from the Time Hotel to the Doctor’s predicament being stranded on Earth, encompassing the star seed and the mysterious briefcase, not forgetting the climactic ending scenes.
Nevertheless, just as with every installment, there can be alterations during the script’s progression, and the author of this special, Steven Moffat, has disclosed some aspects that viewers didn’t get to witness due to a deleted scene.
In an interview with this month’s issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Moffat commented on early drafts of the script: “Originally, there was an additional scene featuring the Doctor receiving a room service tray since he couldn’t access higher levels without a valid pass.
The Doctor exclaims, ‘Ah, I need a tray here! The flaw in every security system lies in its ease of use.’ He nudges the tray towards the elevator door, and the elevator doors slide open. ‘After all,’ he adds, ‘you can always account for human laziness!’
Previously, Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the Fifteenth Doctor, commended Steven Moffat’s script for its “spiritual undercurrent.” He expressed his appreciation saying: “I truly enjoyed this Christmas episode. I loved the script, with Steven Moffat returning to his exceptional storytelling.
His scripts possess an underlying sense of the spiritual, giving them a potent and intriguing flavor within the realm of science fiction.
In 2024, Joy to the World marked the second script penned by Moffat during Russell T Davies’s revival phase of the series, following closely after Boom, which was broadcast prior.
Previously hinting that the upcoming Christmas special might be his last episode on the show, Moffat stated during an interview with TV Choice, “I won’t be part of the series next year. New opportunities are approaching for me, which could mean I may never pen for Doctor Who again.
At the conclusion of singing “Joy to the World,” a thought crossed my mind: ‘Could this be my last moment?’ So, if that’s the case, then number 50 might as well be my farewell.
Over time, I’ve found myself reflecting on my own mortality more often than I used to. It seems as though every year brings new reminders of the fleeting nature of our existence. This person, in his latest musings on topic X, struck a chord with me. His casual mention of Christmas possibly being his last one brought a familiar pang to my heart.
I remember making similar statements myself when I was younger, filled with an air of drama and youthful invincibility. But as the years pass, those words take on a new meaning. They become reminders that time waits for no man, and each day brings us one step closer to our inevitable end.
This person’s words resonate with me because they capture the bittersweet beauty of life. We know it is precious, fragile, and fleeting, but we also have the power to make the most of every moment. So let us cherish the holidays, the people we love, and the opportunities that come our way, for we never know when they may be taken away.
