Goosebumps Author Reveals the Book He Most Wants Adapted (And We’re Completely Shocked)

As a child of the ’90s, I vividly remember the thrill and excitement that R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books brought to my life. The chills down my spine, the sleepless nights spent under the covers with a flashlight, and the anticipation of the next adventure – they were all part of an unforgettable journey.

Reading about R.L. Stine’s favorite Goosebumps book, Brain Juice, stirred up a wave of nostalgia. It’s not as universally known as some of the other titles, but it holds a special place in my heart. I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that it hasn’t been adapted yet, just like how I felt when I found out there wouldn’t be a third sequel to the ’90s movie, “Goosebumps Presents: Night of the Living Dummy 3.”

But hey, who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll see Brain Juice on our screens, and I can relive the suspense and terror all over again. Until then, I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope that the aliens in charge of Disney+ decision-making don’t make us all too smart for everything!

R.L. Stine, renowned for his ‘Goosebumps’ series, has a particular book he wishes to see transformed for the screen, and it’s an intriguing pick. The second season of Disney+’s ‘Goosebump’ series, known as ‘Goosebumps: The Vanishing’, is slated for release on January 10th. In an interview with ‘The Hollywood Reporter’, Stine expressed his preference for which ‘Goosebumps’ book he’d like to see depicted in the show’s future installments, choosing the story ‘Brain Juice’.

Stine explained to THR that it’s a story about children who consume a purple drink which makes them increasingly intelligent. However, they become too smart for their own good – they are expelled from school, lose their friends, and eventually get abducted by aliens. During the journey to another planet, they gradually become less intelligent.

As a die-hard film enthusiast, I must confess that I share Stine’s apparent skepticism regarding the adaptation of “Brain Juice” on Disney+. Being my all-time favorite Goosebumps book, I can’t help but feel that its obscurity might hinder its journey to the small screen, making an adaptation seem like a distant dream.

It’s worth noting that not everyone may be familiar with “Brain Juice,” as it isn’t one of the most recognized tales from R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” series. The “Goosebumps” anthology collection boasts several notable stories that have been adapted in both the original ’90s “Goosebumps” TV series and the Disney+ reboot, such as “The Haunted Mask 1 and 2,” “Welcome to Camp Nightmare,” “Stay Out of the Basement,” “Monster Blood,” “Attack of the Mutant,” and many more.

The book titled “Brain Juice” was initially released in 1998 as a part of the collection known as “Goosebumps Series 2000”. This collection served as a continuation of R.L. Stine’s original “Goosebumps” series, which ended with the publication of “Monster Blood IV” in 1997. One reason that “Brain Juice” might not have received as much attention within the Goosebumps universe is due to the brief duration of the “Goosebumps Series 2000”, as only 25 out of the intended 40 books were actually written, following some difficulties between publishers Parachute Press and Scholastic.

In the ’90s, I was part of a groundbreaking movement that catapulted R.L. Stine into stardom as the Stephen King-like figure among children’s book authors, thanks to the unforgettable Goosebumps series. The TV adaptation of this spooky saga graced our screens in the ’90s on Fox Kids and lasted four thrilling seasons. Later, the silver screen brought Goosebumps to life with the 2015 film and its sequel, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, in 2018. Fast forward to 2023, and Goosebumps found a new home on Disney+ and Hulu, where it continues to terrify and entertain audiences with the ongoing streaming series.

Disney+’s Goosebumps series differs from other instalments in the franchise by focusing on a single story and set of characters per season, rather than following the horror anthology format of the books or original TV show. This might explain why author R.L. Stine is not optimistic about Brain Juice being adapted, despite his fondness for it. However, given Goosebumps’ enduring popularity across generations and its success on Disney+ and Hulu, there could be opportunities to create standalone, anthology stories alongside the main story of each season. Fingers crossed that this might pave the way for Brain Juice, Stine’s favorite Goosebumps tale, to eventually be brought to life as a live-action adaptation alongside other popular series tales.

Goosebumps: The Vanishing arrives on both Disney+ and Hulu on January 10th, 2025.
