As an ardent anime enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the news of Studio Gonzo’s return to the anime scene in 2025 is nothing short of exhilarating! Having grown up watching their masterpieces like Hellsing, Afro Samurai, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, and Welcome to the N.H.K., I am beyond thrilled to witness the studio’s resurgence.
The teaser of two brand-new shows from Gonzo has sent waves of anticipation through the anime community, with fans eagerly awaiting any scrap of information regarding their content and release dates. The collaboration with Peter Ramsay, the mastermind behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, adds an extra layer of excitement to the mix. I can’t help but imagine the innovative blend of anime and live-action in the upcoming noir thriller, Ripper, and the swashbuckling adventure that is Hotaru.
The 20th anniversary celebration for Basilisk at Anime Japan in March promises to be a fitting tribute to one of Gonzo’s classic series. All in all, it seems that 2025 and beyond are shaping up to be an exceptional time for anime fans worldwide. I can hardly contain my excitement as we step into this new year with Studio Gonzo at the helm!
As a final note, I can’t help but chuckle at the thought of how our beloved Alucard from Hellsing might react if he were to find out about these new projects. “Another group of upstarts trying their hand at animation, eh?” I imagine him saying with a sardonic smirk on his face. But deep down, even he would have to admit that the prospect of more Gonzo anime is something worth getting excited about!
Enthusiasts of anime can anticipate plenty of exciting offerings in the upcoming year. Makoto Shinkai has given a hint about an upcoming film, while Season 2 of “Solo Leveling” has already started, and numerous cherished series are set to resume soon. However, the excitement doesn’t end there, as the revered Gonzo studio is slated to reemerge in 2025 with two fresh shows.
Over the past two decades, I’ve witnessed Studio Gonzo contributing some exceptional cult anime titles that have left a lasting impact. Among these masterpieces, my personal favorite might be “Hellsing,” brilliantly adapted from Kouta Hirano’s manga. However, it’s not the only one; “Afro Samurai” (with the legendary Samuel L. Jackson), “Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo,” “Samurai 7,” and “Welcome to the N.H.K.” are also part of their impressive repertoire that truly stands out.
Studio Gonzo Tease Two New Anime Series
To ring in the new year 2025, Studio Gonzo’s CEO, Shinichiro Ishikawa, used social media to mark the occasion and give fans a sneak peek at two upcoming shows. The post included a picture of a handwritten letter that started with “Dear fans, Happy New Year!” The letter continued, “As we embark on this new year, I am thrilled to reveal some exciting news to our global fans. We are in the process of creating two new TV series that will air this year and the next!
We’re excited for you to anticipate our forthcoming updates! Your consistent backing is truly inspiring and appreciated. To add, we’ve got some new shows on the way, along with a live painting session at Anime Japan in March to mark the 20th anniversary of Basilisk. Lastly, remember to ‘Stay Creative, Go Global, Stay Happy!’

What Are Studio Gonzo’s New Shows?
Ishikawa didn’t disclose the details of the two upcoming shows, but hints are scattered all over the internet. In November, it was announced that Peter Ramsay, director of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is working on two new anime projects in collaboration with Gonzo. One of these projects is a movie called Ripper, which is described as a dark and suspenseful noir thriller and will be a blend of anime and live-action. The other project is a series named Hotaru, a sci-fi/fantasy adventure about two star-crossed magical warriors who are bound by love and grief.
Regarding the second TV series, we don’t have many specifics yet. Ishikawa’s announcement hinted at two shows slated for this year and 2026. It appears that “Hotaru” might be the production for this year, while the other series could receive more details later in 2021, leading up to its 2026 debut.
