The director for the upcoming Mass Effect game, colloquially referred to as Mass Effect 5 by fans, has hinted at the potential return of a beloved franchise element. Given the criticism that Mass Effect: Andromeda received, many supporters of the science-fiction RPG series are eagerly anticipating that developer BioWare will draw inspiration from the original trilogy when creating their next Mass Effect installment. One aspect that has sparked much discussion among fans is the possibility of reintroducing the Paragon and Renegade morality system, a key feature in the Mass Effect trilogy. Although it remains uncertain if this system will be incorporated into Mass Effect 5, the game’s director has recently expressed his thoughts on the matter.
Michael Gamble from BioWare shared his personal views on the Paragon/Renegade system used in the older Mass Effect games during a series of discussions. He admitted that most players picked the Paragon options when faced with choices throughout the trilogy, but he felt it was crucial for players to have the option to make Renegade decisions as well.
Indeed, a larger number of individuals enjoyed Paragon, according to Gamble,” he stated. “However, if Renegade hadn’t been around, it wouldn’t have mattered. To me, having a choice is more impactful than the sheer number of players for any given game.
In reaction to his comments about the Paragon and Renegade system in Mass Effect, some fans speculated that this could mean the inclusion of this mechanic in Mass Effect 5. However, Gamble clarified that this isn’t confirmed yet and eager fans will need to stay tuned to find out if it appears in Mass Effect 5. Although there’s no definite confirmation about whether or not Mass Effect 5 will include a morality system, the fact that Gamble hasn’t dismissed the idea suggests hope for those who want to see this feature return.
Currently, there’s barely anything known about Mass Effect 5, and it seems that this situation may persist for quite some time. Since BioWare recently launched Dragon Age: The Veilguard towards the end of 2024, their full attention has been directed towards Mass Effect 5. Consequently, we can expect no significant updates on the game for a considerable period, as its release date is still quite distant.
