It’s quite frequent these days to see characters from DC Comics and Marvel appear together on the big screen, but one of the pioneers who did it was Terence Stamp. This English actor portrayed General Zod in the 1978 film “Superman” and its sequel “Superman II”, and later appeared as Stick in the 2005 movie “Elektra”. In many respects, Stamp paved the way for actors in comic book adaptations for years to follow.
Prior to assuming the role of Stick, Christopher Reeve had already solidified his status as a DC icon through his performances. Meanwhile, Terence Stamp initially appeared as a minor character in Superman, eventually transforming into the primary antagonist in Superman II. His portrayal of General Zod was highly acclaimed and remains admired to this day, which is remarkable considering that many early comic book adaptations are now seen as outdated. Later, Stamp participated in a BBC Radio special titled Superman on Trial, and in 2003, he revisited the franchise by playing Jor-El in Smallville.
In his extensive tenure as a Kryptonian, Stamp might have been stereotypically confined to any Marvel Comics film adaptations. Yet, despite reaching 67 years of age, Stamp proved indomitable, refusing to step back from the action. Remarkably, in 2005, he assumed the role of the blind martial arts master Stick in the spinoff of Daredevil titled Elektra. From the film’s onset, Stamp was a pivotal figure, resurrecting Elektra Natchios (played by Jennifer Garner) and tutoring her in an ancient, mystical art.
The stick plays a pivotal role in the storyline and is a significant character within the Daredevil universe. Had events unfolded slightly differently, Stamp might have embarked on another long-term journey with sequels and spin-offs. Regrettably, Elektra turned out to be a critical failure and didn’t attract audiences either. Consequently, plans for a Daredevil sequel never came to fruition. At that time, Ben Affleck expressed his reluctance to put on the costume again, stating, “wearing a costume brought me embarrassment and something I wouldn’t want to do soon.” As a result, Stick never had the opportunity to cross paths with his student.
It’s now possible to argue that Stamp’s portrayal of Stick is considered canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The franchise has started viewing older adaptations as different realities within its multiverse, such as Elektra. Jennifer Garner reappeared in her role in Deadpool & Wolverine, so Stamp must exist somewhere under the scrutiny of the Time Variance Authority (TVA).
Stick’s Abilities and Comparison
In different comic book interpretations and adaptations, Stick’s strength can vary significantly, but it’s accurate to assert that the portrayal by Stamp is among the most potent. The movie commences with him resurrecting Elektra from the dead, and later imparts knowledge about Kimagure – a martial art – which allows her to revive others upon mastery. This martial art also offers its practitioners a form of foresight, enabling them to anticipate their adversaries’ actions beforehand. This helps explain how a visually impaired character can engage in combat effectively within this adaptation.
In contrast, the MCU’s portrayal of Stick from the 2016 Netflix series “Daredevil” doesn’t possess any exotic powers like those shown in comic books. When we were first introduced to this character, played by Scott Glenn, he lost a fight against Matt Murdock. However, in the comics, Stick has demonstrated abilities such as chi manipulation and astral projection which haven’t been depicted on screen thus far.
In the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again on March 4th, Matt Murdock is set to return, but as of now, there’s no indication that Stick will make an appearance in the new season. However, considering the expanding multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s possible that Scott Glenn may reprise his role as Stick at some point down the line. If not, his impact on comic book adaptations remains significant and enduring.
