It appears that a game for the Nintendo 3DS, rumored to have been in development for about ten years, has officially been scrapped. As Nintendo moved their focus exclusively to the Switch console since its launch in 2017, they gradually discontinued support for the 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS handhelds. Consequently, the 3DS’s decline was hastened, eventually leading to its demise a few years later. Now, one of the third-party games that was believed to still be in development for the Nintendo 3DS has been taken off the radar.
Initiated cancellations for pre-orders of Mighty No. 9 on Nintendo 3DS were initiated, as initially announced by @LonelyGoomba. Launched in 2016, Mighty No. 9 aimed to carry on the spirit of the classic Mega Man series. However, it received negative feedback from both critics and players, prompting developer Comcept to swiftly abandon the project shortly thereafter.
As a dedicated gamer, I backed the Kickstarter campaign for Mighty No. 9, eagerly anticipating its Nintendo 3DS version. One of the exciting stretch goals for this crowdfunding project was a 3DS and PlayStation Vita edition of the game, which we successfully reached. However, unlike the console versions that were slated for release in 2017, the ports seemed to have disappeared into thin air without any further updates or releases.
It’s unusual that the physical versions of Mighty No. 9 on Nintendo 3DS have been up for pre-order on Amazon for nearly eight years. Given this, a few dedicated fans kept a tiny bit of optimism alive, believing that one day this version would be released. However, with Amazon announcing the cancellation of all pre-orders for Mighty No. 9 on the 3DS, it seems that their hopes were misplaced.
Despite the unexpected outcome, it’s surprising that Concept didn’t deliver on their Kickstarter commitment to launch Mighty No. 9 on 3DS and Vita. However, it’s challenging to imagine many people will be disappointed about these handheld versions being discontinued. Moving forward, the studio is focusing on Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, a game scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch in 2025.
