Jeff Baena received heartfelt tributes from his colleagues in Hollywood following his death.
On January 3rd, following the news that a director, husband of Aubrey Plaza, took his own life at age 47, Molly Shannon and other actors who had worked with him expressed their tributes on social media platforms.
The former Saturday Night Live star, who appeared in four out of five movies directed by Baena (specifically his directorial debut “Life After Beth”, “The Little Hours”, “Horse Girl” and “Spin Me Around”), posted several photos on Instagram showing her with Baena, co-stars like Plaza, both on and off the set of their films. Shannon’s January 4th Instagram post was accompanied by a broken heart emoji.
In a heartfelt gesture, Dane DeHaan, who acted alongside her in “Life After Beth”, also expressed his condolences by posting about Baena’s passing on his Instagram stories.
Alison Brie, an actress who featured in multiple of his films, shared numerous images with him on her Instagram Stories, accompanied by a heartbroken emoji and a link to a tribute written by Adam Pally. This man, who worked alongside Brie in ‘The Little Hours’ and Baena’s 2016 production titled ‘Joshy’, as well as the film ‘Life After Beth’, also had a role in it.
On his Instagram post dated January 5th, it was stated that Jeff Baena hailed from Miami and had a kind disposition, being of Jewish descent. He was a team player, offering guidance to others, and on the court, he was known for his scrappy style and an unconventional jump shot that wasn’t exactly pleasing to the eye.
Pally described Baena as a “skilled director with exceptional style and foresight,” emphasizing that he was “a bridge between people, a nurturer of opportunities, the person who always knew the best place to eat no matter the location. A warm host with an unusually welcoming demeanor, a film expert, and above all, a friend to me.
He went on to say, “As a director, Jeff always pursued authenticity. Everything he created had to sound, appear, and feel genuine, which truly reflected his character. He was genuine through and through. You could always trust that Jeff was telling things as they really were because honesty was one of his greatest virtues.
In simpler terms, Pally expressed that he feels deeply saddened not only for Aubrey Baena and the entire Baena family but also for everyone who had the pleasure of being around him on set, at his home, or within his circle. He also thanked Jeff for having faith in him, and may his memory bring comfort to all.
Baena’s brother, Brad Baena, commented on his post, “I am broken.”
Additionally, Baena is also cherished by his mother Barbara Stern, his stepfather Roger Stern, his biological father Scott Baena, and his stepmother Michele Baena. He also has a stepsister named Bianca Gabay and a stepbrother Jed Fluxman. These details were shared in a statement issued to TopMob News by the director’s manager.
Look back at Baena and Plaza’s love story…
Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena haven’t revealed many details about the early stages of their relationship, but they began dating in 2011 following a chance encounter during a round of Balderdash.
But one thing the Parks & Recreation star divulged is that from the start, they bonded over movies.
She shared with Page Six back in 2017 that their love for films is intense, which is why they’ve decided to create movies jointly.
They hadn’t created a film together until three years into their relationship, specifically _Life After Beth_, a project which signified Jeff’s initial venture as a director.
Aubrey often preferred to keep her relationship with Jeff private, but she acknowledged that having a companion in show business comes with certain advantages.
In her interview with People in June 2019, she expressed that when you’re with someone who shares your profession, they can empathize more deeply with the challenges you face. This means you can provide mutual support and truly comprehend each other’s professional journeys.
But that’s not to say it doesn’t take its own work.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must say that collaborating with your significant other can indeed be quite rewarding. However, let’s not forget that it comes with its own set of challenges. It’s crucial to remember that there are many aspects of life we each handle individually, and striking the right balance is key.
After ten years as a couple, Aubrey announced that she and Jeff had gotten married, along with a special mention on social media – and hinting at their upcoming fourth film titled “Spin Me Round“.
She expressed her pride for her husband, Jeff Baena, as he came up with another film set in Italy, causing mischief again. She’s thrilled to be reunited with Alison Brie (who also co-wrote it!) and other talented stars like The Official Superstar (Sordo Ciego), Lauren Weedman, and many more entertaining personalities. Get ready for this one! Prepare yourselves!!
Following multiple film projects with his spouse, Jeff unequivocally conveyed that he is not only her husband or director, but first and foremost, her biggest supporter.
In the Reel Talker podcast of 2022, he expressed that she’s remarkable. He added that if she weren’t his wife, he would want to collaborate with her, but fortunately for him, she is indeed his spouse. The chance to engage in a creative project that satisfies us both – isn’t that uncommon?
Three years prior to my untimely passing at the age of 47, Aubrey and I embarked on our final collaborative project, a film titled “Spin Me Round.” Over the span of 14 fruitful years, we had previously produced “The Little Hours” and I had directed her in “Joshy,” which was released in 2016.
