2024 saw “The Substance” as one of its most successful film festival entries, but don’t expect a franchise to spin off from it. During an interview with Variety over the weekend, writer-director Coralie Fargeat expressed no intention of expanding the story. Instead, she prefers to focus on crafting fresh ideas rather than delving deeper into this particular concept.
Fargeat stated that the purpose of this film is to introduce new, original content, as opposed to sequels, prequels, or follow-ups. He’s excited to contribute fresh ideas to the world in the near future. Fargeat wrote, directed, produced, and co-edited this body horror thriller, featuring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. The film was well-received by critics at its debut on the Cannes Film Festival in May and had a U.S. theater release starting September 20. You can now stream it from home on Mubi.

Moore portrays Elisabeth Sparkle, an actress in decline as she performs on an aging-themed exercise TV show. On her 50th birthday, the producer (Dennis Quaid) lets her go from the program due to her advanced age. Elisabeth is presented with a clandestine drug called “The Substance,” which claims to create a more youthful, attractive, and flawless version of its user.
The drug effectively gives Elisabeth another physical form, portrayed by Qualley. The management of this dual existence intensifies the body-horror aspect, and both characters grapple with it. The imagery was unsettling to many viewers, and as reported by the French publication Le Point, a high-ranking Universal Pictures male executive found the film’s content so objectionable that the studio terminated its distribution agreement for the movie.
The film was globally disseminated by Mubi – a free streaming service that is ad-supported. For those who prefer an ad-free viewing experience, they can rent or buy the movie digitally on most prominent PVOD outlets. Starting this month, the film will be available in the U.S. on DVD and Blu-ray. Pre-orders are currently being taken for delivery on January 21st.
Given the various challenges she faced and her previous accomplishments, it’s not surprising that Fargeat isn’t planning a sequel for The Substance. Prior to making her feature debut in 2017 with Revenge, this French filmmaker honed her skills on short films and television productions. The action-thriller, which featured Matilda Lutz, was another festival favorite that eventually found its home on Shudder. With two successful critically acclaimed projects under her belt, there’s no news yet about what Fargeat will tackle next.
