In a different wording, Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda in “Wicked” were expansive, but the movie adaptation was not, running for approximately two hours and forty minutes. The first part of the film adhered strictly to the initial act of the Broadway musical and the climactic performance of “Defying Gravity.” However, now that “Wicked: Part One” is available on streaming platforms with nearly twenty extra minutes of additional and extended scenes, such as a meaningful conversation between Elphaba and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), and a dialogue between Elphaba and Boq (Ethan Slater), the actresses are disclosing their favorite moments that didn’t make it to the final cut.
Grande revealed to Variety before the Golden Globes on Sunday that she adores every aspect of ‘Wicked’. She especially cherishes the train station scene between Boq and Elphaba, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, which is one of her favorite parts.
This deleted scene, named “Boq and Elphaba’s Conversation,” unfolds immediately after Governor Thropp (Andy Nyman) advises Boq to be cautious with his “extremely valuable” sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode), who is Elphaba’s sibling. Prior to Elphaba’s journey on the train towards the Emerald City to meet the legendary Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), she engages in a heartfelt discussion with a disappointed Boq.
In this conversation, Boq expresses his lingering hope regarding his unrequited affection for Galinda. When Elphaba suggests he should let go of that hope, Boq counters, “Why can’t I? Consider what hope has achieved for you. Your aspirations are being realized — why shouldn’t mine be?
She inquires, “Why can’t you simply share the truth with my sister?” Boq feels torn because he doesn’t wish to cause Nessa pain, but Elphaba responds, “You’ll inevitably cause her hurt either way.”
Boq then explains, “I can’t just alter my emotions.” Turning to Fiyero of the Winkie Country, whom Galinda admires, Elphaba declares she doesn’t have romantic feelings. Feeling misunderstood, Boq apologizes and says, “Oh, I must have been mistaken. I thought we were being truthful.
In their initial reaction to reading Boq’s line in the script, “Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought we were being honest,” Grande and her acting coach Nancy Banks expressed great affection because they felt it was the best line in the entire movie. They emphasized this sentiment by encircling numerous hearts around it. Later on, Grande shared with Variety that she deeply misses that scene, as it showcases exceptional work.
Erivo expressed her disappointment when she found out that favorite scene of hers was missing from the theatrical cut. She also lamented over the omission of a scene in the forest with Fiyero before she put the lion down, saying, ‘I couldn’t understand why they left it out; I really missed it.’
In the scene that was later cut, titled “Elphaba & Fiyero in the Forest,” this event transpires following Elphaba’s outburst over a trapped lion cub causing poppies to discharge pollen, causing everyone else in class to fall asleep, except for Elphaba and Fiyero. Impressed by her actions, Prince Fiyero is drawn to Elphaba as she gently soothes the struggling cub. She then sets it free and reassures the animal, “You don’t need to be frightened of me.
Additionally, Erivo expressed regret over the disappearance of “Train Station Goodbye,” a scene where Galinda and Madame Morrible console Elphaba following an unkind remark by Thropp.
Erivo shared that she cherished that particular instant as it seemed everyone was supporting her character. The three sequences she regretted vanishing initially, but fortunately, they’ve been included in the home release, enabling viewers to witness them.
According to Director Jon M. Chu, each scene that got removed was challenging to eliminate, but the most difficult one was “Elphaba’s Promise,” where Elphaba assures her new companion Galinda, “I won’t abandon you like I did before.
Chu remarked that the task at hand was challenging as Ari and Cynthia were excelling in their efforts. He added that revealing Elphaba’s invitation to the Emerald City would somewhat alleviate the tension in the following scene.
However, I discovered that it softens the anticipation somewhat for the following scene (the one where Elphaba receives an invitation to the Emerald City).
If Elphaba is trustworthy and has made a promise, she will invite Glinda. However, if you’re unsure about their location or if Glinda has feelings for Fiyero and there’s a possibility of a romantic entanglement, it adds an element of surprise and intelligence to her actions. Therefore, Chu mentioned that the situation was challenging because at this point in our movie, we’re already at two hours long and need to reach the Emerald City and meet the Wizard.
The first part of the movie “Wicked” is now ready for you to stream at home, while the sequel “Wicked: For Good” is set to premiere in theaters on November 21, 2025.
