Doctor Who schedule prohibited Ncuti Gatwa from starring in Golden Globe-winning movie

The evening of the Golden Globes was filled with great anticipation, as several highly-acclaimed films received awards throughout the ceremony. One such film, “A Real Pain,” brought home the award for Best Supporting Actor, with Kieran Culkin taking the honors.

As a passionate cinephile, I’d say the movie takes me on a journey, where I find myself alongside Macaulay Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg, both of us cousins with an unexpected bond. We set off on a voyage to Poland, driven by our shared desire to pay tribute to our grandmother. However, as we delve deeper into our family’s past, long-buried tensions resurface, adding layers of complexity to our journey.

The movie has been generating a lot of conversation, not only due to its recent Golden Globe win, but it’s interesting to note that another actor from Doctor Who might have been cast in A Real Pain as well.

At a question-and-answer session held by the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Eisenberg mentioned that he had been pondering over Ncuti Gatwa as a potential cast member for his upcoming project.

In the movie “A Real Pain”, Kurt Egyiawan (House of the Dragon) portrayed Eloge, who is a survivor of the Rwandan genocide. Eisenberg shared that his initial intention was to cast a Rwandan actor. During auditions, he encountered an exceptionally talented individual named Ncuti Gatwa.

Currently, he’s the incumbent “Doctor Who,” who had initially agreed to star in the upcoming movie. However, due to a shift in “Doctor Who’s” schedule, he became unavailable, leaving us in a predicament. Subsequently, we embarked on a challenging quest to find a talented Rwandan actor for the role, but it proved difficult.

At that moment, I handed the task over to Eloge, who is of Cameroonian descent, and asked him, “Could you assist me in shaping this in a way that shows respect for your cultural background?

Born in Rwanda, Gatwa spent his childhood in Scotland following his family’s escape from the nation during the devastating 1994 genocide.

Although the Fifteenth Doctor narrowly missed out on appearing in A Real Pain, the Eisenberg film has been consistently praised by critics and is now earning accolades.

Over the course of his tenure, Jodie Whittaker’s performance as the main character in the popular science fiction show has consistently improved and grown stronger.

In just a few days, the Critics’ Choice Awards are upon us, and Ncuti Gatwa has secured a nomination for the category of Best Actor in a Drama Series.

In this contest, Gatwa will be competing against Jeff Bridges (from The Old Man), Eddie Redmayne (in The Day of the Jackal), Hiroyuki Sanada (from Shogun), Rufus Sewell (known for The Diplomat), and Antony Starr (famous for The Boys).

As a movie enthusiast, I couldn’t help but express my excitement when I learned that Russell T Davies, the brilliant mind behind Doctor Who, took to Instagram to celebrate Ncuti Gatwa’s nomination for Best Actor! This is an incredible feat, and I couldn’t be more thrilled for him. In the spirit of the Doctor himself, I must say, “What a Doctor indeed!
