In an interview with Stephen Totilo from GameFile, Cory Gasaway, Vice President of Product, Game, and Player Experiences at Sony Interactive Entertainment, shared insights into how the User Interface (UI) for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) is designed, particularly focusing on how players interact with the console. He discussed that the central element in designing the PS5 UI is the Welcome hub.
For newcomers, the Welcome hub is typically the initial screen that appears when turning on a PS5. This hub offers a quick overview of different features related to your console and account. It might show you your Trophy progress across games, check the battery level of your controllers, present current deals on the PlayStation Store, or even feature a trailer for newly-revealed game titles.
As a PS5 gamer, I can personalize my Welcome Hub experience. I get to choose the widgets that show me the info I care about most, making my gaming home screen feel tailored just for me!
In his discussion, Gasaway explains that the structure of the Welcome Hub on the PlayStation 5 was developed based on the frequency at which PS5 users fully turn off their consoles compared to using Rest mode. As per Gasaway’s explanation, the PS5 user community is roughly evenly divided between these two groups. Users who completely shut down their console will encounter the Explore screen, while non-US players will see information about their previously played game.
According to Gasaway’s explanation, we discovered valuable information about how gamers engage with their PlayStation 5 console during breaks. For instance, we initially thought most players would put their console in rest mode rather than shutting it down completely between gaming sessions. However, we found out that approximately half of our users chose each option. This means that for roughly half of our userbase, when they turned on the system again, those in the US were directed to our “Explore” page, while non-US users were taken to the last game they played.
In his discussion, Gasaway explains the evolution of the Welcome hub and its impact on players. This latest update gives players who had previously turned off their console a quick summary about the system and their account before diving into the game. Meanwhile, those using Rest mode will continue playing from where they left off.
He stated, “The main reason we developed the Welcome Hub, which has now gone live worldwide, was this key factor. The Welcome Hub serves as a personalized area where players can arrange widgets for easy access to information before they dive into their gaming adventures. Previously, if players left their console during gameplay and then returned, they’d automatically resume the game. However, for those who turn off their console and restart it, they are now directed to the Welcome Hub first, where they can view their customized page featuring game suggestions, messages from friends, or other activities tailored to their preferences at that moment.
The Welcome Hub is a fresh addition, introduced through a PlayStation 5 software update that was rolled out in September 2024.
