Microsoft is preparing for a significant year of updates for Windows, as the lifespan of Windows 10 ends in approximately ten months. In a recent blog post, Microsoft has emphasized their dedication towards Windows 11 and Copilot+ PCs and are urging all Windows 10 users to transition to Windows 11 during this year.
Yusef Mehdi, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, emphasizes that the new innovations coming with Windows 11 PCs are particularly timely. As Windows 10 approaches the end of its lifecycle on October 14, 2025, PCs running this version will no longer receive security or feature updates. Instead, Microsoft is aiming to assist customers in transitioning to contemporary new PCs operating on Windows 11 for continued protection.
Based on Microsoft’s statements, approximately 80% of businesses using Windows 10 and about 70% of consumers are planning to switch to new Windows 11 hardware by year-end and within the next 24 months respectively. If these figures hold true, Windows 11 is poised to experience a substantial increase in market share, potentially making it the leading desktop operating system.
2024 marked a significant milestone for Windows 11, with the unveiling of Copilot+ PCs, a new class of Windows devices boasting unique AI capabilities according to Microsoft. Our Editor in Chief, Daniel Rubino, even went as far as referring to it as a “renewal” or “reshaping” of the fundamentals within the Windows ecosystem.
It’s evident that Microsoft considers 2025 significant for Windows 11, aiming for it to become the dominant version of Windows, surpassing Windows 10 in usage. To achieve this smoothly, Microsoft needs to make sure Windows 11 is robust and appealing, avoiding any deterrents for those considering an upgrade.
It seems improbable that there will be a significant new Windows release this year because Microsoft is heavily invested in Windows 11 at the moment, and releasing a “Windows 12” could confuse users who are still transitioning to Windows 11 from Windows 10. Instead, we can expect ongoing enhancements to the existing Windows 11 experience, with an emphasis on AI integration and quality-of-life improvements through regular updates.
Stepping forward into Windows 11 alongside everyone else, I’m thrilled to share our fresh additions, strengthened security measures, streamlined functionalities, and the cherished Windows feel that you’ve grown accustomed to,” – Mehdi.
Previously, Microsoft significantly upgraded the Windows system with the Windows 11 version 24H2 update, serving as the foundation for the LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) version of Windows 11 today. It seems likely that the upcoming Windows 11 version 25H2, slated for release later this year, will also be based on this platform update.
Microsoft’s blog post underscores the spotlight on CES 2025 and the introduction of new Windows 11 PCs equipped with Copilot+ functionalities from various hardware manufacturers. Additionally, it emphasizes the efforts by Microsoft’s silicon partners such as Qualcomm, Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA to incorporate Copilot+ features in their work. It is evident that Microsoft places great emphasis on advancing Copilot+ compatible hardware moving forward.
Over the next few months, it’s likely that Microsoft will unveil a fresh round of Surface Copilot+ hardware, featuring updated Surface PCs powered by Intel’s Lunar Lake processors, as well as compact 11-inch devices running on Arm architecture.
