Megumi Ishitani, the director behind the popular special “One Piece Fan Letter” and some of the highest-rated episodes in the series’ history, such as those from the Wano Arc, has expressed her intention to transition from TV episodes to directing a film next. This announcement has already sparked excitement among fans who are eagerly anticipating her upcoming project.
In a recent interview on X by user zuorinandang, Megumi Ishitani (from One Piece Fan Letter’s storyboard artist Keisuke Mori and scriptwriter Momoka Toyoda) discussed their future aspirations. During the conversation, Ishitani expressed a keen interest in directing a full-length project, such as a film, if presented with the opportunity. Ishitani stated to Newtype: “I don’t dwell on the future, but I approach every piece of work I’m currently doing as my last. Yet, if there’s still an opening, I am intrigued by the idea of creating a theatrical adaptation.” Ishitani further explained, “Though I have always considered participating in the production process for a theatrical version, I haven’t had the chance. I look forward to trying my hand at making a full-length project.
Megumi Ishitani Could Hopefully Direct One Piece‘s Next Feature Film
Despite joining the team at Toei Animation for One Piece relatively recently, Megumi Ishitani’s work has been impressive, and fans are thrilled about her potential to direct the next One Piece movie. While she is primarily recognized for her contributions to One Piece, Ishitani also gained attention with the final episode of Dragon Ball Super in 2018, leading up to her involvement in the Wano Arc of One Piece in 2021.
In Ishitani’s work, her unique color schemes and unusual yet captivating compositions and viewpoints create an impact that is recognizable as soon as you see it. Her focus on minute details and intricately designed storyboards are also renowned, resulting in some of the smoothest and spellbinding animated scenes, if not the most visually distinctive.
On July 11th, starting at 9:30 AM, episode 982 of the anime “One Piece” will air, featuring the character Flying Six!
Artist Ishigyunyu (@ishigyunyu), who directed the 957th episode, is sharing a sneak peek from his illustration for that episode!

Apart from a Fan Letter, Ishitani has directed three outstanding episodes of One Piece thus far, each receiving high praise and standing out among the rest. These include episode 957, where the Seven Warlords were dramatically reintroduced in an impressive cinematic sequence, episode 982, featuring Queen’s Onigashima concert brought to life in a distinctive music video-like segment unlike any other One Piece episode, and of course, episode 1015, which beautifully adapts Yamato’s flashback and emphasizes the similarities between Luffy and Roger through one of the most breathtaking anime-original scenes in One Piece.
Although Toei Animation hasn’t officially confirmed the next “One Piece” movie, it’s been more than two years since the release of “Film: Red”, implying that a new “One Piece” film is long past due. Encouragingly, Toei’s latest financial report suggests they plan to launch two new movies in 2025, and one of these might just be the upcoming “One Piece” movie. However, considering the box office triumph of “Film: Red” and the lofty expectations set by “Fan Letter”, a film directed by Ishitani could potentially reach the same heights again.
It turns out that Mori, who brought to life the intense fight between Luffy (Gear Five) and Kaido in Episode 1072 as well as the captivating new opening for the Egghead Arc titled “UUUUUS!”, shares Ishitani’s enthusiasm about creating a full-length film. When asked about his aspirations, Mori expressed his desire to produce a theatrical version and improve his skills as an original animator.
Enthusiasts are already showing strong support for allowing Ishitani sufficient time and resources to achieve her aim, with Keisuke Mori on board too, it’s highly likely that the upcoming theatrical release of “One Piece” will be a work of art. The duo of Ishitani and Mori have demonstrated they make an exceptional animation team. Here’s hoping the favorable response to “Fan Letter” encourages Toei Animation to entrust Ishitani, Mori, and Toyoda with the next “One Piece” film project.
