For years, the “cute girls (or creatures) performing adorable activities” genre has been a cornerstone in the anime world, as each new addition introduces fresh spins on the classic theme to captivate those who appreciate slice-of-life narratives. One such contemporary adaptation, a horse-racing series titled “Uma Musume“, debuted in 2016 and has since expanded into a multifaceted media venture due to its endearing character designs, appealing aesthetics, and unexpectedly lively competitions.
In a number of aspects, the universe of Uma Musume is light-hearted, focusing on a team of young women who are essentially reincarnations of former champion racehorses, now equipped with horse ears and tails. These equine-themed individuals attend a unique academy in Tokyo to enhance their racing abilities, aiming to recapture the fame they enjoyed during their previous lives as racers. The absurd premise is further enhanced by each character embodying classic anime archetypes and harboring individual aspirations for success in their new life.
Similar to other franchises whose popularity hinges on their characters, Uma Musume has spawned several spin-off productions, with the latest being an anime titled Uma Musume Cinderella Gray. This series focuses on a character from the original cast, Oguri Cap, and her experiences at the Kasamatsu Training Center Academy. Interestingly, Oguri Cap, like the other characters in the series, is modeled after a real-life equine celebrity from the Heisei era, known as “The Idol Horse,” who sparked Japan’s second major wave of horse racing enthusiasts. To the delight of Uma Musume Cinderella Gray fans, game developer Cygames recently unveiled a fresh teaser, confirming that the series will be a 2-cour production set to premiere in April 2025.
Oguri Cap Was the Perfect Choice For a More Serious Take On Uma Musume’s Ridiculous World
Instead of the lighthearted narrative in the original Uma Musume, the spin-off Cinderella Gray appears to adopt a more somber tone, highlighting Oguri’s serious side and her journey towards becoming one of the strongest racers among the cast. The enticing trailer boasts stunning animation, suggesting that racing elements will play a significant role in the story, rather than merely depicting Oguri’s daily life in a cute manner. Similar to other Uma Musume anime productions, Cinderella Gray is being developed by CygamesPictures, under the direction of Yuki Ito and Takehiro Miura. Aki Kindaichi oversees series composition, Masafumi Sugiura manages script writing, and Takuya Miyahara and Keigo Sasaki serve as character designers.
