In the realm of the blockbuster film Pacific Rim, the 8th of January and the 12th of January in the year 2025 have become noteworthy dates. As we delve into this week, enthusiasts find themselves revisiting this classic movie, as these specific days mark two of the most monumental battles depicted in the narrative. For those seeking a recap and more, proceed with caution – spoilers lie ahead.
In 2013, the film “Pacific Rim” debuted, depicting the initial emergence of monstrous creatures known as Kaiju from a portal beneath the Pacific Ocean in that year. The narrative progressed to 2020, a time when Yancy Becket (Diego Klattenhoff) perished while battling alongside his brother Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam). Then, five years later, in 2025, the primary events of the story unfold.
January 8th: The Battle of Hong Kong
In contrast to reality as we know it, the fictional chronology portrayed in “Pacific Rim” presents both advantages and disadvantages, yet enthusiasts eagerly await significant landmarks. The 8th of January is one such milestone; it initiates with Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) employing Jaeger tech to synchronize with a Kaiju mind through a process called “drift,” which might have provided the collective Kaiju consciousness with fresh data, potentially triggering the first instance of a “double event.
On that very day, two monstrous creatures of Category IV, Leatherback and Otachi, simultaneously assaulted Hong Kong: Leatherback and Otachi were the culprits. Three Jaeger robots were sent into combat against them: Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha, and Striker Eureka. In the fierce fight that ensued, both Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha were annihilated, along with their pilots. It was then that Gipsy Danger, serving as backup, managed to vanquish the monsters. Subsequently, a newborn Kaiju crawled out of Otachi, only to suffocate from its own umbilical cord.
January 12th: Humanity Fights Back
On the timeline of the Pacific Rim, the following significant event takes place: Humanity chooses to confront The Breach actively on Sunday, January 12th, instead of waiting. Upon arrival, they discover two Category IV Kaiju, Scunner and Raiju, guarding it, and later a Category V called Slattern. At a high price, the Jaeger’s nuclear core was exploded to drive off the monsters and seal The Breach, seemingly eliminating the threat forever.
For devoted Pacific Rim enthusiasts, these dates mark the most significant cinematic moments to rejoice over until 2035. Given their enthusiasm, it’s no surprise they’re making the most of it on social media. While only one theatrical sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, was produced, followed by a Netflix animated series running for two seasons, there is currently another Pacific Rim prequel series in development.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but be engrossed in the world of Jaegers and Kaijus all week long! If you haven’t already, you can dive into the original “Pacific Rim” on Hulu. For those craving more action, “Pacific Rim: Uprising” is available for rental or purchase from PVOD stores. And if you’re looking for something new and animated, don’t forget to check out “Pacific Rim: The Black” streaming on Netflix!
