Initially, viewers believed they had grasped the direction of the plot in “Spy x Family”, but its latest chapter has presented an unexpected sci-fi surprise that no one could predict. Given the series’ history of featuring psychic children and prophetic dogs, this alien and UFO twist is remarkably strange even for it. The new chapter appears to be setting up the series to transition into science fiction. However, Melinda’s recent revelation might have a straightforward explanation that fans are overlooking, and they may have been hinted at for quite some time.
In Chapter 109 of Spy x Family, Melinda Desmond shares her personal struggles with Loid, hinting at issues concerning her family. Surprisingly, their conversation starts with Melinda inquiring about Loid’s beliefs on Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). Maintaining a straight face, Melinda then reveals that her husband, Donovan Desmond, is actually an extraterrestrial being. Although it might sound absurd, there could be a logical explanation for Melinda’s far-fetched belief. It appears she may be suffering from Capgras Syndrome, a psychological condition causing one to believe a loved one or family member has been replaced by an alien or imposter.
Melinda’s Belief That Donovan Is an Alien Has a Scientific Explanation
Although viewers have often speculated about hidden mysteries within the Desmond family, no one ever thought UFOs or alien impostors would be a part of it. Previous odd behaviors exhibited by Donovan had many suspecting he might possess psychic abilities like Anya, or at least be linked to the enigmatic Project Apple. Yet, the idea that Donovan is an alien is such a wild guess, even imaginative Anya wouldn’t have considered it.
It’s plausible that there’s a more sensible reason behind Melinda’s thoughts, and it appears a psychiatric disorder, particularly Capgras Syndrome which is often linked to schizophrenia, provides the most logical explanation for her peculiar behavior in the series. Her instability since her introduction supports this theory. This disorder could account for the oddities we’ve seen from Melinda, such as her mood swings in Chapter 75 and her paranoia towards her husband, as evident in Chapter 106. Other delusions common in schizophrenia might also explain these aspects of her character.
It’s intriguing to note that Capgras Syndrome is often found in individuals with brain injuries, leading to questions about Melinda’s potential role in Project Apple. One can’t help but ponder how Project Apple managed to progress significantly without resorting to numerous experiments. Some speculate that Demetrius might possess telepathic abilities, similar to his father, and maybe Melinda was herself a subject of Project Apple’s tests.
Indeed, it’s plausible that Donovan may indeed be a telepath, with Melinda’s suspicion of her husband being an alien just a means to explain his peculiar behavior and uncanny ability to read minds. An alternative perspective could be that maybe Melinda is playing mind games with Loid, although this notion seems unlikely given Melinda’s past need for professional help. However, the ensuing chapters in Spy x Family will undoubtedly shed light on the series’ outcome and the truth behind the peculiar Desmond family, aliens or otherwise. Regardless, Endo is certain to create a captivating storyline.
