On Monday, a cryptic message from Will Smith sparked speculation among fans that he might join “The Matrix” franchise. However, shortly afterward, both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported, based on their trusted sources, that Smith is not connected to the film series whatsoever. Despite this clarification, the buzz around Smith’s potential involvement in the new “Matrix” movie, initially announced in April, continues to intrigue fans, possibly intentionally.
On Monday, I shared a video featuring text reminiscent of “The Matrix” from 1999. It read: “Back in 1997, the Wachowskis offered me the role of Neo in ‘The Matrix.’ I passed on it and opted for ‘Wild Wild West.’ I thought it was more fitting for me then. Yet, I can’t help but wonder: What if I had played Neo? Reality check, Will… The Matrix might have been different with you.” I’ve pondered my close call with the “Matrix” franchise before, and it seems like there wasn’t any significant reason for mentioning it on Monday other than a bit of fun.
If there’s any connection to be made, fans have theorized that the post could refer to the newly announced Matrix movie, which was initially unveiled in April. This upcoming film is said to be penned and directed by Drew Goddard, known for his work on movies like “The Martian”, “The Cabin in the Woods”, and “World War Z”. It’s rumored that Goddard himself proposed a sequel idea, and Warner Bros. Discovery seems to have taken a liking to it. However, the original series creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski will not be directly involved, although Lana is expected to assume some responsibilities as an executive producer.
Information about the sequel’s plot details is still sparse, as no significant updates have been made since April. Some enthusiasts have proposed theories suggesting the studio might be exploring creative methods to generate excitement before a major reveal – possibly even involving Smith. Yet, this remains speculation at the moment, and even if it’s accurate, it doesn’t automatically mean that the actor is directly connected with the project.
There’s a good chance that the Matrix movie by Goddard is still in the works. Previous news suggested it had been given the go-ahead, and so far, there’s no sign of any issues. Nevertheless, details about its progress, plot, or release date remain scarce. It’s important to mention that Goddard was also brought on board for the DCU writers’ room, contributing to the broader narrative of the franchise without penning a specific script.
The Matrix franchise has faced a bumpy ride with its sequels. The original film is nearly perfect, but the subsequent films have been unfairly criticized by numerous fans. Discussions among fans often target the latest installment, 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections, particularly harshly. To add to its woes, the movie faced financial difficulties as it was released during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Moving forward, it’s expected that whatever Smith and the Matrix franchise have in store for us will be unrelated events. As of now, the original Matrix trilogy can only be streamed on Philo, whereas Resurrections is accessible on Max.
