The story, “The Damned,” begins by showing a solitary woman trudging through an icy wilderness during the night on a barren snow-covered terrain, which is not Bradford but Iceland. A voiceover announces that this location offers chances, yet one must endure the cold, scarcity of food, and long hours of darkness. However, the woman isn’t from Bradford; she’s named Eva (played by Odessa Young). In a small fishing village where only a few fishermen reside, she is left with nothing but her deceased husband’s boat as a reminder of him. The villagers themselves are suffering from food shortages and have to carefully ration whatever little they possess.
When they witness a boat overturning in icy waters, they face the dilemma: rescuing those on board but realizing they don’t have enough food to feed both themselves and the potential rescued. However, as the sinking boat’s cargo of supplies washes ashore, they paddle out towards a rock to search for survivors. But soon, things take an eerie turn when their initial reluctance to rescue the crew comes back to haunt them in a ghostly manner. Amidst this strange occurrence, Eva finds herself drawn to the handsome Daniel (Joe Cole), sparking feelings of affection between them.
The film is shot in a gloomy manner, accompanied by an eerie soundtrack that, along with the recurring image of shadowy figures lurking in the dimly lit huts, gradually pushes the villagers to their breaking point. Initially effective, the repeated appearance of the unsettling character becomes repetitive and loses its impact over time. Despite its short runtime of 90 minutes, The Damned manages to keep you engaged until the climactic revelation.
