Allison Holker better understood her husband after his death.
After her husband, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, took his life in December 2022, the 36-year-old has shared that by examining his possessions and journal entries, she’s gained a clearer understanding of the extent of Stephen’s suffering. This included learning about the depth of his addiction to drugs, as she found a large quantity of drugs hidden in his closet only a few days before he was buried.
Speaking with People in an interview on January 7, I shared a chilling experience: I was hanging out with my closest confidant, and we were sorting through his closet, selecting an outfit for him for the funeral. As we sifted through his belongings, I stumbled upon mushrooms, pills, and other substances I couldn’t identify without the aid of the internet. This moment hit me hard because there were many things unveiled in our shared space that I had no idea about. It was truly unsettling to discover just how much was going on beneath the surface, which I had been completely oblivious to.
She went on to say, “That was a truly terrifying realization for me. It allowed me, however, to understand that he had been experiencing so much turmoil, keeping many things hidden, and likely felt a great deal of shame.
In my personal experience, for nine years now, I’ve been married to Stephen – the father of our children Weslie (16), Maddox (8), and Zaia (5). During this time, we’ve always been transparent about his marijuana usage. After our kids retired for the night, he would retreat to our guest house for a bit of relaxation, where he would occasionally smoke marijuana. He also used that space to unwind with some drinks, a personal ritual I respected, understanding it was his moment to recharge, which I found acceptable.
However, it wasn’t until she started uncovering her husband’s hidden truths that she came to understand the extent of his self-concealment, encompassing hints in his diaries suggesting he had experienced sexual abuse from a male authority figure during his childhood.
Allison shared that her husband was struggling deeply within himself, attempting to manage and alleviate these feelings through self-care, as he cherished those around him too much to burden them with his pain. He preferred to carry it alone.
And while she admitted experiencing feelings of betrayal, her perspective ultimately shifted.
As I delved into Stephen’s personal journals and traced back to the books he had annotated, it offered me a profound insight into his life’s journey and the battles he was fighting. This intimate peek left me deeply empathetic towards him, feeling a heavy heart for the pain he carried silently.
At that point, Allison sought support from her dear ones as well. They aided her in navigating her newfound insights and emotions during this phase.
She acknowledged that it was quite challenging to connect all the dots. However, through conversations, both with friends and casual remarks, delving into his diaries… it became evident that he had endured a great deal as a child and never addressed those issues.
She expressed, “Finding it tough to imagine that he never shared his feelings with another soul and wished to move past this, to emerge on the other side. I truly wish those experiencing similar situations find the courage to step out of the shadows and realize everything will be alright.
The strong desire to assist others was a significant motivator behind the dancer’s decision to pen her memoir, titled This Far, which will be released on February 4th.

What I’ve discovered is there are numerous other resources out there that many people aren’t aware of. Over the years, I’ve encountered countless individuals reaching out to me for conversation, and my experience has shown me that mental health can affect anyone, regardless of when in their life it occurs.
She noted, “Those who possess much light have experienced significant darkness as well. It’s understandable since light and darkness often go hand in hand.
