We now know a tiny bit about one of the year’s biggest upcoming games.
During NVIDIA’s CES 2025 presentation, they showcased clips of various games utilizing the technology in their upcoming 50-series graphics cards. Among the buzz surrounding the new graphics card lineup, a noteworthy detail slipped through: DOOM: The Dark Ages by Bethesda Softworks and id Software will not only incorporate DLSS 4 but will also include path tracing technology.
You can check out the brief bit of new game footage for DOOM: The Dark Ages in the video below:
From the debut of the initial DOOM game, id Software has frequently taken the forefront in PC technology advancements, all while prioritizing robust gameplay. Notably, DOOM Eternal, running on id Tech 7, demonstrated exceptional optimization even with ray tracing, so it’s intriguing to contemplate how far DOOM: The Dark Ages will push the boundaries of the latest iteration of id’s self-developed engine.
Despite path tracing currently being exclusive to PC systems, I am assured that the console versions of DOOM: The Dark Ages will perform smoothly. This is because id Software provided excellent upgrades for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 for DOOM Eternal at no cost in 2021, and this upcoming game is specifically designed to run on the latest generation of console hardware.
Only a handful of games support path tracing right now
Over the past few years, path tracing, also known as “full ray tracing,” has remained relatively uncommon compared to other types of ray tracing. Path tracing is essentially an advanced form of ray tracing, as it provides a more comprehensive model of light in a scene. Unlike traditional ray tracing that focuses on specific elements such as the reflections of light in water and glass, path tracing models the entire light of a scene more accurately, resulting in a significantly more lifelike image overall.
Not only is it quite costly computationally, needing NVIDIA’s frame generation tech to function smoothly, but the expensive aspect is what DLSS 4 (exclusive to 50-series cards) aims to enhance significantly through Multi Frame Generation. Moreover, it’s essential to note that just a few games currently support path tracing, and the list includes CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077, Remedy’s Alan Wake 2, and MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
It’s particularly interesting that the latest project has been unveiled, given that MachineGames is affiliated with id Software. Notably, Indiana Jones was built using a variant of id tech known as “Motor”. I’m eager to find out about any technical collaborations between the teams as they move forward with DOOM: The Dark Ages.
The action-packed game titled “DOOM: The Dark Ages” is scheduled to debut sometime in 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5. As an exclusive Xbox title, it will be playable right away for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers as well as PC Game Pass users.
