Nintendo Switch Online subscribers are being given free profile icons inspired by the classic NES game, Yoshi. However, to unlock these icons, users must first complete a prerequisite – play the Yoshi game on the NES app. Once they’ve launched the game once, they can claim five unique icons: three featuring Yoshi himself and one each for Goomba and Piranha Plant characters.
Instead of certain Nintendo Switch Online users finding the game requirements for these icons annoying, Yoshi simply needs to be launched via the NES app without any specific time constraints associated with the game. As soon as this action is completed, the profile icons become accessible. Moreover, completing this task will grant you 50 Platinum points, enough to obtain the entire Yoshi collection. This offer seems quite advantageous and may encourage subscribers to explore a game they might not have considered before. Keep in mind that these icons can be claimed until February 3rd.
Initially, Yoshi debuted in the game “Super Mario World”, released as a launch title for the SNES. Unfortunately, players who hadn’t upgraded from Nintendo’s initial console missed out on playing a Mario platformer with their dinosaur pal. Yet, Yoshi’s charm was undeniable and he eventually starred in one of the games launched during the NES era. The first game where Yoshi took center stage was a puzzle game named after him, developed by Game Freak. This studio, which later became famous for creating the Pokémon franchise, developed “Yoshi” as one of their early projects.
In the game Yoshi, pictures of traditional Mario adversaries descend from the top of the screen in a manner reminiscent of puzzle games such as Tetris and Dr. Mario. The players assume the role of Mario at the bottom of the screen, adjusting the tiles to arrange enemies in matching sets and eliminate them. Additionally, two halves of Yoshi’s egg shells are falling, and aligning them along a line allows the removal of any accumulated enemies between them. Interestingly, the profile icons provided through Nintendo Switch Online do not feature the Boo characters that accompany Goombas and Piranha Plants in the game.
Alongside the introduction of fresh profile images, subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online were additionally gifted with a new playlist on the Nintendo Music app. Tunes from Donkey Kong Country 3 have been added, thereby concluding the entire soundtrack collection from the SNES series. Over the past couple of months, Nintendo Switch Online has showcased an increased emphasis on Donkey Kong content; this includes the addition of the Donkey Kong Country soundtracks to the mobile version of Nintendo Music and the incorporation of the Donkey Kong Land games onto the Switch’s Game Boy app. This surge of Donkey Kong-themed content is undoubtedly a strategy to generate excitement for the upcoming release of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, which is set to hit the Nintendo Switch next week.
