Brazilian Nun Named World’s Oldest Living Person at 116

This nun is in the habit of living well.

After the passing of a Japanese woman, it has been verified by the Guinness World Records that Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas, a soccer-loving nun from Brazil, has taken the title as the oldest living person at 116 years and 210 days old.

Though recently recognized as the oldest nun in the record books, the news took her family by surprise. Her 84-year-old nephew shared with the Associated Press that Canabarro was often undernourished and frail during her youth, leading many to believe she may not make it through childhood.

As for the secret to her longevity? Canabarro chalks it up to her devout faith in God.

In February 2024, she shared with Longevity Quest, an organization specializing in studying the world’s longest-lived individuals, that he holds the key to life itself. She referred to him as the enigma behind all things.

Born on June 8, 1908, in the south of Brazil, as per LongeviQuest researchers, Canabarro was the child of João Antônio Lucas and Mariana Canabarro Lucas. She is a great-granddaughter of the Brazilian General David Canabarro.

As a teenager, she embarked on her spiritual path at Santa Teresa de Jesus boarding school in Sant’Ana do Livramento, Rio Grande do Sul. Later, in her youthful years, she relocated to Montevideo, Uruguay, where she joined the Catholic Church through baptism. Afterward, she eventually went back to Brazil and took up a teaching role.

As stated by LongeviQuest, when she was 26 years old in July 1934, she committed to lifelong religious vows and became a nun. In recognition of her 110th birthday in 2018, she was esteemed by Pope Francis.

However, besides her Catholic faith, Canabarro has another passion: Soccer.

Without a doubt, she is an ardent fan of Sports Club Internacional, a professional soccer club based in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Each year, this team commemorates the birthday of their longest-standing supporter by adorning her room with gifts in their trademark red and white colors, as reported by the Associated Press, with her nephew confirming the decoration.

But what does Canabarro like most about the team? Its power to bring people together.

In a video shared on social media for her 116th birthday in June 2024, she stated, “Regardless of race or wealth, Inter is the team that represents the people.
