Jake Johnson is remembering his late friend.
Four days following Jeff Baena’s tragic suicide at the age of 47, the former star of “New Girl”, Aubrey Plaza, paid a heartfelt tribute to him.
In a January 7th Instagram post, Jake expressed his feelings by saying, “I adore you, Jeff, but I disapprove of your recent action. Nevertheless, my affection for you remains.
Alongside a touching tribute, the actor from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse posted a collection of photos to honor Jeff, who acted alongside Jake in the 2015 film Digging for Fire and directed him in Joshy in 2016. In one of the photos, Jeff seemed thoughtful as he sat at a dining table with friends playing poker. In another picture, the director of Little Hours held a baby tenderly while wearing a warm smile.
Based on reports from the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office, as seen by TopMob News, it was determined that Jeff took his own life on January 3rd.
Following the unfortunate event, many of the screenwriter’s colleagues and friends have paid heartfelt tributes to him. Among them are Molly Shannon, Brady Corbet, Dane DeHaan, and Alison Brie.
Furthermore, Adam Pally, the actor known for appearing in Jeff’s movies such as “Life After Beth,” “The Little Hours,” and “Joshy,” showcased his exceptional sense of style and directorial vision.
Adam described him as someone who brought people together, cultivated opportunities, always knowing the finest eateries no matter the location, on Instagram on January 5th. He was an extraordinarily hospitable host with a nearly unsettling welcoming policy, a film expert, and above all, he was my friend.
Speaking of Aubrey, she got married to Jeff in 2021 following a decade together. She made a joint statement with her family – Barbara Stern (mom), Roger Stern (stepfather), Scott Baena (father), and Michele Baena (stepmother).
According to a statement obtained by TopMob News on January 6, Plaza and the Baena/Stern family expressed their profound sorrow, stating that this event was beyond anything they could have imagined. They also expressed their heartfelt gratitude towards everyone who has shown them support during this difficult time.
They added, “Please respect our privacy during this time.”

Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena haven’t revealed many details about the beginnings of their relationship, but it’s known that they began dating in 2011 following a chance encounter during a round of Balderdash.
But one thing the Parks & Recreation star divulged is that from the start, they bonded over movies.
In 2017, she shared with Page Six that her and [he/they] have such a passion for films, it’s the reason they collaborate on movie projects.
They didn’t create their initial film together until three years into their partnership, specifically Life After Beth. This film served as Jeff’s introduction to directing.
In most cases, Aubrey and Jeff preferred to keep their romantic life private, but Aubrey openly acknowledged that having a fellow entertainer as a partner comes with certain advantages.
In June 2019, she shared with People that being with someone who shares your profession allows them to comprehend the challenges you face more deeply. This means they can offer mutual support and truly appreciate the paths we’re walking together.
But that’s not to say it doesn’t take its own work.
The former Child’s Play actor commented, “I believe this could be fantastic,” but added, “Working with a partner can indeed be difficult at times. There are many aspects we handle individually, and I think the key is finding balance.
Following a ten-year partnership, Aubrey made it official with Jeff by getting married. She hinted at this news and gave him a special mention on social media, while also announcing the upcoming fourth film they’ll be working on titled “Spin Me Round“.
I can’t help but swell with pride as my beloved spouse, @jeffbaena, conjures up another cinematic masterpiece that transports us to the enchanting land of Italy, stirring up even more mischief! The anticipation is palpable as I prepare to reconnect with the incredible @alisonbrie (who not only stars in this but co-writes it too!) and other stellar talents like @theofficialsuperstar @sordociego and @lauren_weedman, just to name a few. Get ready, everyone! Preparati!
Following a series of films together, Jeff emphasized that beyond being her spouse or director, he is foremost her most ardent supporter.
He shared on the “Reel Talker” podcast in 2022 that she’s truly remarkable. If she weren’t his wife, he would collaborate with her professionally, but fortunately, she is his wife. The chance to work together creatively, where we both find satisfaction, is quite uncommon, he added on the “Reel Talker” podcast in 2022.
13 years prior to Jeff’s unexpected passing at 47, he and Aubrey collaborated on their fourth and last movie, titled “Spin Me Round.” Throughout their 14-year partnership, they also produced “The Little Hours” and Aubrey starred in Jeff’s 2016 film “Joshy“.
