New Spider-Man 4 Rumor Reveals Marvel Villains Scrapped From MCU Sequel

There are whispers about the upcoming “Spider-Man 4” movie, suggesting that Scorpion and Shocker were initially planned to appear in the sequel before the script was revised. According to Daniel Richtman, a well-known industry insider, these characters were part of the original version, but they’ve been replaced as the script is currently being rewritten. The new villains have not yet been revealed.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: In 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” I saw two characters, Shocker and Scorpion, making their only appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shocker, played by Bokeem Woodbine, was a member of Adrian Toomes’ gang. During an altercation with yours truly, Spider-Man, he ended up getting arrested. On the other hand, Scorpion, portrayed by Michael Mando from “Better Call Saul,” is a notorious crook who tried to buy some fancy weapons from Toomes. He too was apprehended. Later in the post-credits scenes of “Homecoming,” we find him in prison, swearing revenge against yours truly, Spider-Man.

As a die-hard movie buff, I’m thrilled to share that, come July 2026, I’ll be witnessing Tom Holland once again don the Spider-Man suit in “Spider-Man 4.” Production for this highly anticipated sequel is slated to kick off somewhere during the summer. While specifics about the plot are still under lock and key, producer Amy Pascal has hinted that “Spider-Man 4” will delve into the emotional aftermath of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” where Doctor Strange cast a spell erasing everyone’s memory of Peter Parker. Can’t wait to see how this unfolds on the big screen!

Mando has hinted at a possible comeback for Scorpion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stating that there’s “always a possibility.” The actor has also proposed his concept for a Scorpion solo spin-off film, focusing on Mac Gargan’s complex personality as a detective who strays from the law. However, Mando’s portrayal of Scorpion has been absent from screens for quite some time now. A variant of the character can be found among the villains in the animated Marvel series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. This show unfolds in a universe distinct from the MCU movies.

If the news about Scorpion’s role being cut is accurate, it’s disheartening because Mando, who delivers strong performances, has unresolved business in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Initially, fans speculated that the scene after the credits in Homecoming hinted at a future appearance for Scorpion, suggesting a revenge storyline where Gargan aimed to take down Spider-Man. Sadly, it appears this potential conflict is among many unresolved plot points in Spider-Man movies. It would have been intriguing to witness Mando portray the intense and ruthless side of Gargan as he relentlessly pursued Spider-Man. While there’s a chance Scorpion could reappear in another project, the passage of time since Homecoming has premiered seems to make that prospect less likely.

Previously, the MCU Spider-Man movies introduced antagonists that hadn’t been seen in live action before (such as Vulture in “Homecoming” and Mysterio in “Far From Home”). In light of this, it’s possible that the script for “Spider-Man 4” is being revised to give other villains from Spider-Man’s extensive rogues gallery a chance to appear on the big screen. It remains to be seen who these villains might be, but it would be exciting if the film features Peter Parker dealing with a common street-level threat, which would be a different kind of challenge compared to what Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has faced before. Filming for “Spider-Man 4” is set to begin soon, so fans should expect casting announcements and information about who the web-slinger will face off against in the near future.
