Over the years, I’ve grown particularly fond of the Sniper Elite series, and I’m guessing many others feel the same way. The historical stealth shooter franchise by Rebellion hasn’t exactly revolutionized anything it’s released, instead preferring to navigate familiar waters. However, it consistently delivers high-quality, well-crafted games that fans of the genre can’t resist, which is why when a new installment is announced, if you’re into stealth games, you’re likely keeping an eye on what’s next for Sniper Elite.
In 2022, Sniper Elite 5 was released and lived up to expectations as a strong game. However, when the series comes back for its next installment soon, it won’t be with another numbered title. Instead, Rebellion is planning to unveil Sniper Elite: Resistance. On the surface, this appears to be a standalone spinoff, but considering all that it’s promising, it seems more like a full new Sniper Elite game.
It’s quite obvious that this spinoff shares a lot in common with its parent game, Sniper Elite 5, which is a positive aspect we’d like to see more of in the gaming industry. While asset reuse can have negative connotations and isn’t always beneficial, there are instances where developers skillfully save resources by reusing past work without sacrificing quality. Yakuza: Like a Dragon often achieves this balance, and it seems that Sniper Elite is following suit, which we find acceptable.
In addition, it’s worth noting that Sniper Elite: Resistance is marketed primarily as a spin-off story. For the first time in the franchise, players won’t control Karl Fairburne, but instead take on the role of Harry Hawker, a British Special Operations Executive agent. This character will be pursuing a secretive and lethal new Nazi war machine in occupied France, which coincides with the events of Sniper Elite 5. While this premise is intriguing, it’s also crucial to mention that story has never been the main draw for the Sniper Elite series. Therefore, labeling Resistance as a narrative spin-off shouldn’t significantly impact the gameplay experience.
As a devoted fan, I must admit that in the aspects crucial to this particular series, the game seems to be making all the right pledges. Over time, what Sniper Elite games have excelled at is granting players the freedom to roam in vast, open-ended stealth arenas and complete objectives according to their preferred style. It offers Hitman-esque gameplay (though not as extensive), but what truly sets it apart is its appreciation for creative gameplay and prioritization of player autonomy and liberty. To top it off, the maps are intelligently designed and brimming with intriguing additional content to explore.
All these elements seem to be part of the anticipated features in “Sniper Elite: Resistance”. Although it’s important to note that unforeseen issues may arise, and we haven’t had the chance to play the game ourselves yet, the sneak peeks we’ve seen so far (which are quite extensive) have been extremely enticing. Moreover, early impressions from different gaming outlets indicate that the game is shaping up to offer another thrilling dose of the open-ended historical stealth sandbox experience that the series has mastered over time.
Apart from the thrill of Nazi hunting, there are other reasons to anticipate Sniper Elite: Resistance. The genre has a rich history, and we can’t deny our enthusiasm for more, despite recently enjoying it through Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. What draws many to the Sniper Elite series is the opportunity to eliminate Nazis in uniquely gory, imaginative, and intense ways, complete with x-ray killcams. It appears that Resistance will deliver on this exciting aspect as well.
Resistance. Instead, it appears to be a continuation of what we’ve seen in the series before, or as one might say, “more of the same.” Even though Sniper Elite 5 wasn’t significantly different from its predecessor, the upcoming Sniper Elite: Resistance seems to follow a similar pattern. This means that if you’ve played any recent games from the series, your experience with Sniper Elite: Resistance is likely to be familiar. However, there’s something comforting about knowing exactly what to expect and, based on past experiences, it’s probably going to be a good game.
If you’re concerned about whether a standalone sidequel, priced at $60, will offer good value for money, you might find reassurance in knowing that the game’s campaign is expected to be similar in length to Sniper Elite 5, which can range from 10 to 40 hours depending on playstyle. This suggests that there will be substantial content in the campaign alone.
In addition to its main storyline, the game also offers a cooperative survival mode and player versus player multiplayer, allowing you to play the entire campaign cooperatively. It also includes an “Invasions” mechanic for the campaign. If you’ve played Sniper Elite 5, these features might sound familiar – it seems that this game follows a similar pattern. However, what is certain is that Sniper Elite: Resistance will have a substantial amount of content from the get-go. Rebellion has a history of providing post-launch support for its games, but since this isn’t a major release, it’s unclear how much additional content we can expect after launch. The level of support may depend on the game’s sales performance.
As a devotee of stealth games, particularly the Sniper Elite series over the past few years, I’m excitedly hopping on the hype train for Resistance. It may not be the mind-blowing hype associated with the biggest releases, as Sniper Elite is acknowledged as an AA series. However, it consistently offers well-crafted and immersive stealth sandbox experiences, even if it doesn’t always break new ground. The Sniper Elite series deserves its recognition and more, and I hope it will continue to captivate audiences with the upcoming launch of Resistance.
