Given the mixed responses to the finale of the hit TV series Lost, which remains one of the most popular network shows ever produced, many fans might be intrigued to catch up with their beloved characters again, along with another attempt at resolving the show’s conclusion. However, is a reboot on the horizon? In an interview with Variety, director Drew Goddard (The Martian, Cloverfield, Bad Times at the El Royale) shared that, as of now, there’s no Lost revival in development. Goddard, who served as a writer, supervising producer, and co-executive producer on Lost from 2005-2008, expressed to the outlet his fondness for the show and its production: “I loved working on that show so much, and I loved what we did.
2023 saw the unveiling of the fact that working on the set of “Lost” was a challenging and negative experience for many, both on-camera talent and behind-the-scenes personnel. As detailed in Maureen Ryan’s book “Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood,” this book provides an in-depth examination of the production of “Lost.” The interviews conducted paint a picture where actors of color and female cast and crew members expressed feelings of being subjected to damaging biases from showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, as well as working in a hostile environment. This revelation added to the growing list of off-screen scandals associated with “Lost.
Joss Whedon’s TV accolades encompass shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, and many more. Regarding a possible revival of these projects, Whedon stated: “I often get asked about potential reboots for series I’ve worked on, and I always feel passionately that I don’t want to simply reproduce what we did before. I would only be interested if we could create something unique and innovative within the framework of the show. Sometimes it just boils down to availability and desire. So there are no current plans for it, but one should never rule out possibilities.
At present, the filmmaker is deeply engaged in multiple forthcoming ventures. These include a reboot of the Holes series, which was recently unveiled, and most significantly, The Matrix 5, where Goddard will assume the roles of writer, director, and producer. In April 2024, it was disclosed that he proposed a sequel concept, which Warner Bros. Discovery accepted. However, Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the originators of the original film series, won’t be directly involved in this project. Lana is said to assume some responsibilities as an executive producer. Since the initial announcement, no additional updates or plot details have been disclosed.
Speculation swirled this week that Will Smith could be linked to The Matrix 5, but these claims were swiftly dismissed by sources. For now, it’s uncertain what exactly Smith is hinting at, but on Monday he shared a video with the caption: “In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix. He declined, opting instead for Wild Wild West, feeling it was more suitable at the time. However, one can’t help but wonder: What if Will Smith had played Neo in The Matrix? Time to awaken, Will… The Matrix may yet have a role for you.
Lost is available to stream on Netflix and Disney+.
