It appears that Austin Butler might not actually be playing Patrick Bateman in the upcoming American Psycho film, according to the novel’s author, Bret Easton Ellis. He stated on his podcast that the project may not be official yet. When the reboot was announced, opinions were divided – some considered remaking the 2000 movie unnecessary, while others were enthusiastic about the concept. There was much speculation and even actors expressing interest in playing the lead role. However, the news of Butler being cast quickly emerged, generating more excitement for the film. But it now seems that this casting news might have been premature, as Ellis suggests it’s just speculative reporting.
Typically, authors are kept informed when their books are being adapted, whether it’s a new adaptation or a reimagining. However, Ellis claims he hasn’t been notified yet about the potential film, despite it reportedly being in development.
Ellis stated clearly, ‘I’m not connected in any way to this.’ All I can say is that I might financially benefit if they proceed, but creatively, I have no involvement whatsoever.
Ellis’ words do resonate, it isn’t unprecedented for a studio to assess fan interest by subtly announcing an idea rather than an official confirmation. Given that American Psycho is already a cherished film and the remarkable achievement of its adaptation with Christian Bale and director Mary Harron, it’s shrewd to test the waters first before fully diving in.
If the upcoming remake of “American Psycho” materializes, it would align with Hollywood’s common strategy of remaking films. As of now, Luca Guadagnino’s version of “American Psycho” is being talked about and considered, but it remains to be seen if the project will truly come to life. All we can do is wait and find out if the idea will officially be greenlit. Neither the director nor Butler have spoken publicly about this potential film yet.
