8 Coronation Street characters who should have a huge 2025 – from Jenny Connor to Todd Grimshaw

2023 has brought turbulence to the residents of Coronation Street, as the unexpected stabbing death of Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan) has sent ripples of disbelief and sorrow throughout the neighborhood.

Even as we continue to feel the impact of saying goodbye to Gail Rodwell, portrayed by Helen Worth, on our screens, it’s important to remember that the iconic character is thriving in real life, enjoying every moment in France!

As the Platt matriarch departs and numerous other characters prepare to exit in 2025, I’ve been pondering over which characters should step into the limelight from those who remain.

Many characters could benefit from having their own narratives developed, or simply require more focus in the script compared to what they’ve received in recent times.

As I gather my thoughts following the intense moments in ‘Corrie’, let’s explore the characters who might shine brightly in the year 2025, according to our predictions.

In this way, it’s written in the first person and uses a conversational tone that is easy to read and understand.

8 Coronation Street characters who should have a huge 2025

1. Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews)

Jenny Connor, who runs the pub, has been experiencing a more tranquil phase recently. She’s been catering mainly to the regular patrons and offering emotional support to her soon-departing stepdaughter Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan), as she navigates through the challenges of her pregnancy and related boyfriend troubles.

It’s long overdue for Jennifer, who has been around for 39 years and made her debut way back then, to have a dedicated plotline of her own.

Ever since she was taken hostage by Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce), and concocting a cunning scheme with Daisy to utilize Carla Connor’s (Alison King) funds to reacquire the Rovers, Jenny has found herself with limited activities other than serving drinks.

Let’s have her expand her horizons within the community, spend more time interacting with stand-in mom Rita Tanner (played by Barbara Knox), and develop her own unique storyline.

2. Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson)

For several decades, Steve (Simon Gregson) has been a consistent figure on the cobblestones, skillfully injecting humor amidst the more serious narratives.

However enjoyable those instances might be, we’re looking for something deeper from him, and we know that Gregson can handle substantial, emotionally charged narratives. For instance, he skillfully portrayed Steve’s moving struggle with depression.

Lately, he has been going through a difficult period after separating from his wife Tracy Barlow (played by Kate Ford). As a result, he finds himself residing with his father-in-law Ken (William Roache), and despite numerous efforts, he hasn’t found happiness in love once more.

It’d be interesting to see Steve, known for his typical escapades, take on the role of uncovering Cassie Plummer’s (Claire Sweeney) deceit, considering she drugged Ken to keep him as a caregiver. This could provide a change of pace and reveal more about Steve beyond his usual exploits.

3. Mary Taylor (Patti Clare)

Patti Clare’s charming character, Mary, has experienced a fair amount of turmoil and sorrow, yet she continues to bring joy to us. We’re more than happy with Mary, but that’s just it – we yearn for Coronation Street to give her a more substantial role so we can delve deeper into her story.

In summary, Mary has a steady job at a flower shop and close-knit friends, yet her screen time is sparse compared to numerous other characters who seem to be involved in almost every storyline development.

For some time now, Brian has had feelings for Mary that go beyond friendship, yet things have remained stagnant between them. Shouldn’t we consider expressing heartfelt sentiments to Mary, who is known for her romantic nature, or perhaps introduce her to her grandson, George Appleton?

It seemed troublesome when Mary reunited with her self-centered son, Jude (Paddy Wallace). Could there be deeper issues worth examining there? There’s a lot more to Mary than just floristry and socializing at the local tavern.

4. Brian Packham (Peter Gunn)

Previously, we’ve expressed a hope that Brian (from Peter Gunn) and Mary might become a couple. Yet, it’s just as valid for the proprietor Brian to have his own moments in the spotlight.

In the role he plays as Rita’s supervisor, Brian has provided plenty of hilarious moments – such as when he innocently asked Rita last year if she felt her identity as a woman was being acknowledged. It’s not that we just want more comedic instances from Brian; it’s also crucial that… (we desire more than just humor from him).

In my perspective as a film enthusiast, one particularly moving moment for me was when the character I’m following tenderly assisted Abi Webster, portrayed by Sally Carman-Duttine, in composing a victim impact statement, following the tragic loss of her son Seb, skillfully played by Harry Visinoni.

It would be beneficial to find opportunities for Brian to consistently showcase his kind demeanor, similar to how Roy Cropper’s (David Neilson) wisdom positively impacts those around him.

5. Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce)

Initially, it’s worth noting that Todd (Gareth Pierce) is expected to get a new love interest this year, as Kate Brooks, the producer, hinted: “He’s been single for quite some time and he’s simply marvelous. This upcoming relationship will surely bring its own challenges and tribulations, but I’m excited to delve deeper into the Grimshaw family.

With mum Eileen (Sue Cleaver) set to depart in 2025, it seems clear that the narrative will shift towards exploring Todd as an individual character, which is exciting news for viewers!

In the final struggle of Paul Foreman, portrayed by Peter Ash, against Motor Neurone Disease, Pierce delivered an exceptional supporting performance. It’s high time for him to have his own storyline now.

6. Alya Nazir (Sair Khan)

Currently, Alya, portrayed by Sair Khan, is in a relationship with Adam Barlow, played by Sam Robertson. Her career is thriving, yet upcoming storylines will show her becoming progressively uneasy about representing the murder suspect Matty Radcliffe, played by Harry Lowbridge.

Alya shares with Adam that she’s contemplating leaving her job because she wants to prioritize her principles. Here’s hoping this move indicates positive changes ahead for Alya.

Will Alya continue to express strong moral values and take on significant roles behind the scenes in others’ stories, or will we find her stepping into the limelight with her unique perspective by 2025?

7. Izzy Armstrong (Cherylee Houston)

Apart from potentially upsetting her supervisor Carla, Izzy (Cherylee Houston) is predominantly connected to the Underworld factory. Earlier, Izzy had a captivating narrative revolving around chronic pain, where she utilized marijuana for relief.

However, quite some time has elapsed since this matter was last discussed, and those who live with persistent pain due to various health issues are well aware that it remains a continuous challenge for them.

Let’s observe Izzy sharing about her current situation and also delving into the less heavy topics she’s been dealing with recently. It’s important that Izzy isn’t just a part of Carla’s team in terms of numbers, but also contributes significantly.

8. Michael Bailey (Ryan Russell)

For the past four years, it’s been revealed that Michael (Ryan Russell) was deceived into believing he had fathered a daughter named Tianna. This role delivered Ryan’s most outstanding performance. Since then, his character has become a real-life father and landed a significant part in Underworld.

Last year saw a brief fling with barmaid Glenda Shuttleworth, portrayed by Jodie Prenger, but I found myself single-handedly on the sidelines once more.

We found it quite pleasant to see him paired with Glenda. Despite the fact that her conflict with brother George (Tony Maudsley) initially gave Michael pause because of her actions, she quickly changed her ways – isn’t it possible for her to get another opportunity?

If nothing else works, it’s long overdue for Michael to explore interests beyond his family and profession. How about you, Corrie, help him embark on a personal adventure?
