This year at the Consumer Electronics Show, Sony showcased an innovative concept for Future Immersive Entertainment designed to offer me an immersive, interactive experience.
At this point, we’re operating more on a conceptual level, but a live demonstration enabled participants to enter the realm of The Last of Us and experience it from a unique vantage point.
The essence of the experience is a room enclosed by high-definition crystal LED screens on all sides, creating a game world that surrounds you. Adding immersive sound, tactile feedback, atmospherics, and even scents aims to draw you further into an interactive environment than ever before, making it feel as if you’re truly part of the game. In other words, you could experience the smells within the game.
In this specifically designed game scenario, players are provided with a gun-like controller. They point and fire at approaching dangers such as the odious Clickers. It’s safe to assume their scent is quite unpleasant.
This isn’t a product or service that’s already available to the public, as it’s still in development and likely years away from being ready for widespread use. It might eventually appear at locations like theme parks or arcades, but due to the space and technology needed, it will surely be costly if they choose to proceed with it further.
What do you think about the innovative technology from Sony that they’re promoting? Would it appeal to you if you could play games in an immersive manner using this tech? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
