As a seasoned movie critic, I must share my thoughts on this week’s gripping episode of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. A chilling nod to one of the most harrowing scenes from the prequel trilogy sent shivers down my spine – the sight of a lightsaber wielded against the innocent younglings at the Jedi Temple was disturbing in its original context. However, in Skeleton Crew, the tables have turned, with the children stepping into the limelight as our heroes. Proceed with caution, for I’m about to reveal some major spoilers!
In the series titled “Skeleton Crew,” the four principal characters have found themselves in precarious situations, ranging from amusing adventures to genuinely alarming predicaments. Throughout this journey, we’ve been left questioning Jod Na Nawood’s (played by Jude Law) intentions, but it seems his ill-will is becoming more evident. The latest episode concluded with Jod drawing his lightsaber near the children and their parents, which immediately reminded viewers of Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) igniting his lightsaber before a group of younglings in “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.
In the last twenty years, this scene has turned into a meme among Star Wars fans, taking place shortly after Anakin Skywalker commits himself to Darth Sidious and the dark side. Although the actual violence isn’t shown, it’s heavily implied that he cold-bloodedly murdered an entire room of younglings, which leaves us with a chilling sense of personal tragedy. One of these children speaks up, asking: “Master Skywalker, there are too many of them! What are we going to do?” Despite not knowing any of the younglings, their plea still resonates deeply because we believe Anakin would protect them from invading clone troopers.
By the way, it’s worth mentioning that this young Jedi trainee, Sors Bandeam, is actually his canonical name. This name is an anagram of Ross Bandeam, who portrayed him in the Star Wars series. His limited backstory was initially revealed in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, and later, Bandeam himself shared more details about his journey in a question-and-answer session with fans on Reddit.
Despite the warning signs since Episode 3, characters we’ve grown fond of in Skeleton Crew, such as Jod, are hit particularly hard by this threat. We knew Jod wasn’t a typical hero, but it’s shocking to witness him using one of the galaxy’s deadliest weapons against the very children he had been guiding and safeguarding. Yet, with only one more episode left in the season, it’s not hard to imagine that our perception of Jod could shift yet again before the final curtain falls.
Right now, you can stream “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” and “The Skeleton Crew” on Disney+. The final episode of “The Skeleton Crew” is set to air on Tuesday, January 14th.
